Ms. NTĐ (36 years old, living in Cu Chi, Ho Chi Minh City) was taken to the emergency room by her family in a state of severe pain in the right hypochondrium accompanied by a mild fever. Tests showed that the patient had gallstones and liver damage.
On February 28, Master - Specialist Doctor 2 Tran Van Minh Tuan, Head of the General Surgery Department of Xuyen A General Hospital (HCMC) said that patient D. had been actively treated with antibiotics but the symptoms had not improved, the pain in the right hypochondrium had recurred many times. In this situation, the doctors advised the patient to undergo laparoscopic surgery to remove gallstones and drain the liver abscess to completely resolve the pain as well as the risk of gallbladder cancer.
“During the surgery, the team laparoscopically removed the gallbladder and placed a drainage tube into the liver abscess to drain the pus out. At the same time, the team also collected a sample for testing and discovered it was a worm. This is a surgery that completely resolves two overlapping diseases at the same time: gallbladder stones and liver abscess caused by parasites,” said Dr. Tuan.
Worms are removed from the patient.
After surgery, patient D. recovered well, no more abdominal pain, and was able to eat and live normally. The patient was discharged 5 days after surgery and scheduled for a follow-up visit.
According to Dr. Tuan, recently, the rate of people with liver abscesses caused by parasites being hospitalized has been increasing. Therefore, Dr. Tuan recommends that people pay attention to clean eating and drinking and deworming periodically every year. When patients discover any unusual symptoms such as frequent dull abdominal pain, vomiting, bloating, etc., they should go for an early examination to receive timely treatment from a doctor, improving their quality of life.
