Once feeling overwhelmed because there were many friends around him who won international awards and were students at specialized schools, but then Long broke through and won 10/10 A-class scholarships, got a high-paying job in his 4th year and became the valedictorian of Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
Lai Ngoc Thang Long, born in 2000, graduated from the Computer Science major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology with a GPA of 3.93/4.0, the highest in the entire K63 class. This result is something Long never thought of in his first year, because "my starting point was more modest than most of my classmates".
Born in a mountainous commune of Duc Tho district (Ha Tinh), because his house was far from town, Long rarely went to extra classes when he was young. His mother’s computer, an elementary school teacher, became a “powerful assistant” in helping him find documents for self-study.
Although it was difficult, according to Long, it helped him learn how to explore and expand his knowledge beyond books. Thanks to that, in both 10th and 12th grade, Long won the provincial excellent student award in Mathematics. Long also became the student with the highest A score in Duc Tho district and passed the entrance exam to the Computer Science major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology in 2018.
Lai Ngoc Thang Long graduated from Computer Science at Hanoi University of Science and Technology with a GPA of 3.93/4.0.
However, when entering the school, Long still felt overwhelmed because there were so many talented friends around him. “Most of them had won national and international awards or studied in specialized schools or selective classes. I knew my starting point was not like that, so I could only try my best.”
Realizing that, in the first days of studying, Long always kept the same way of studying as in high school: listening attentively in class and doing homework right after class. This made the male student realize that the subjects at the Polytechnic were not as difficult as he thought. In fact, listening to the teachers' passionate lectures made the male student more inspired to study.
The first semester went smoothly, Long achieved a GPA of 3.85, surpassing his friends who had won national and international awards. That made the male student gradually get rid of his inferiority complex, regain his confidence and motivation that "in the same environment, I am not inferior to my friends".
As if with some “doping”, Long kept his “form” by focusing on studying right from the first days, and at the same time, he systematized his knowledge after a week instead of cramming it in at the end of the semester. He also searched for documents and practiced questions throughout the study process to get familiar with the types of questions.
Thanks to effective study methods and review strategies, Long has achieved a maximum overall score of 4.0/4.0 for many consecutive semesters.
Long was admitted to the Party at Hanoi University of Science and Technology earlier this year.
Along with studying, from the third year, the Polytechnic student also began looking for opportunities to work in businesses to accumulate expertise. Amidst many concerns about the direction in the Computer Science industry, Long decided to pursue the field of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence because he realized that this is an emerging industry with a lot of potential.
Long became a rare student selected to participate in Viettel's Talented Internship program, then entered the top 10 best interns and was proposed to sign a full-time contract.
During this time, Long also co-authored a paper on Intelligent Traffic Violation Detection using Deep Learning published at a scientific conference.
But in the second semester of his fourth year, Long decided to compete with experienced candidates in the field of Data Science at Techcombank. Unexpectedly, the male student became an exception to be officially hired and signed a debt contract 1 year in advance. This is also the job Long has pursued until now.
Taking the initiative to accumulate experience early on, according to Long, has helped him accumulate a lot of practical experience, while also having an additional source of income to cover living expenses and save up to buy equipment for studying.
In his spare time, Long is also an active member of the Hanoi University of Science and Technology's Technology Innovation Club, helping juniors solve problems in the field of Information Technology or in business cooperation activities and scientific research at labs.
Despite being busy with many roles, Long still had 10/10 excellent grades in studying and training, won a type A scholarship for 5 years and many corporate scholarships.
Dr. Bui Quoc Trung, lecturer of Computer Science, was impressed with Long. Although he came from a poor rural area with difficult learning conditions, he always strived to excel in his studies.
With Mr. Trung, Long has outstanding expertise and experience in the fields of Computer Science, Data Science, Computer Vision...
I am always careful, decisive, have a scientific working method, always make a specific plan and roadmap for each job before starting.
“Long not only seeks effective solutions but also ensures feasibility and practical application. These are important and potential qualities for a successful future PhD student,” said Mr. Trung.
Currently, Long is still working as a Data Science specialist – a job he has been working on for over a year. The male student hopes that this will be a potential environment that will help him learn expertise, make important contributions to the industry and soon advance in his career.
