US launches new technology to support breathing for fighter pilots

According to Honeywell, cBRAG technology helps fighter pilots maintain breathing and alertness while flying in high-gravity conditions.

During training and combat missions, fighter pilots are often required to perform intense maneuvers such as sudden acceleration, sharp turns, or high-speed flight, resulting in exposure to high G-forces (Gravities). High G-forces put pressure on the circulatory and respiratory systems, which can cause G-force-induced loss of consciousness, reducing the ability to control the aircraft and threatening flight safety.

To address this issue, Honeywell developed the Connected Breathing Regulator and Anti-G (cBRAG) system. This technology combines an electromechanical anti-G valve with a programmable pressure breathing schedule that adjusts oxygen levels and anti-G protection based on real-time flight parameters. When pilots experience periods of high G-force flight, the system automatically increases breathing pressure and oxygen regulation to support alertness.

The cBRAG system is designed to optimize breathing efficiency, reduce the risk of loss of consciousness, and maintain performance in extreme conditions. Its flexible adjustment capabilities enable it to accommodate a wide range of flight scenarios, from basic training to high-intensity combat missions.

A notable feature of cBRAG is its built-in sensor-based diagnostics, which allows for real-time health monitoring, fault detection, and data logging. This data helps operators analyze post-flight performance, improve combat readiness, and reduce maintenance time. In addition, the self-charging mechanism and modular design facilitate maintenance, replacement, or upgrades, while reducing operating costs.

The product has completed internal testing and has been approved for flight, demonstrating its ability to operate in a variety of conditions. Not being subject to the constraints of the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) also makes the technology easy to deploy to international customers, expanding the scope of application to many markets.

cBRAG’s modular design allows for installation on a wide range of aircraft, from fifth and sixth generation fighters to legacy platforms undergoing upgrades. This allows air forces to adopt new technology without changing the entire aircraft configuration. The system is also designed to accommodate both new development programs and existing upgrade projects, providing operational flexibility.

With the ability to provide precise oxygen, protect against G-forces, support diagnostics and performance analysis, cBRAG is considered a comprehensive solution to improve pilot safety and endurance in high-intensity missions. This technology marks a new step forward in the field of life support on military aircraft, while contributing to improving the combat effectiveness of air forces in modern combat environments.
