The plane had to make an emergency landing at Miami International Airport (MIA) on January 19 after experiencing engine trouble. According to a crew member, there were five people on board. The Boeing 747 had a problem with engine number 2 during the takeoff phase. Florida firefighters were mobilized to respond promptly.

Shortly after the emergency landing, several clips appeared on social media showing flames coming from the left engine of the 747 while still in the air. According to Atlas Air, the crew followed all standard procedures and returned to MIA safely.

Boeing and General Electric, the aircraft engine manufacturer, have not yet responded directly to the incident. The incident occurred at a time when Boeing is facing a safety investigation after part of the fuselage of a 737 MAX 9 operated by Alaska Airlines was blown into the air. The incident forced the pilot to make an emergency landing, but no one was killed or seriously injured. US aviation authorities have ordered the grounding of 171 737 MAX 9 aircraft with a configuration similar to the one involved in the incident.
