The Kamchatka Peninsula, some 7,100 km (4,300 miles) from Moscow, was hit by a storm over the weekend, with rain forecast to ease later on Sunday.

"At the moment, the search has not yielded any results," Russia's state news agency RIA quoted Sergei Lebedev, the Kamchatka region's emergency minister, as saying.

Mr Lebedev added that the slopes in the search area were covered with dwarf pines and other vegetation, making the use of equipment impractical.

Earlier, Russian media reported that a Russian helicopter with three crew members and 19 passengers on board went missing in the far eastern Kamchatka peninsula.

Kamchatka, nine hours from Moscow, is a popular tourist destination, known for its pristine rivers, geysers and volcanoes.
