On June 2, UEFA announced that Mourinho had been charged with "insulting and insulting the referee", and said that the organization's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body would decide the matter "in due course".

UEFA also accused Roma of "throwing objects, setting off fireworks, causing damage, crowd disturbance and inappropriate behaviour" during the final in Budapest, Hungary. Champions Sevilla were also charged with "fans invading the pitch, throwing objects, setting off fireworks and inappropriate behaviour".

Mourinho, Roma players and fans repeatedly insulted and attacked referee Taylor during and after the defeat to Sevilla at Puskas Stadium on May 31. Believing that Roma were being unfairly treated, Mourinho insulted Taylor in the car park. "You disgraceful bastard. You fucking bastard," he said, then repeated before getting into Roma's car, "Congratulations, you disgraceful bastard."

At the post-match press conference, the "Special One" also criticized Taylor for only giving yellow cards to Roma players and should have sent off Erik Lamela. Meanwhile, Roma defender Diego Llorente accused: "The referee blew in favor of Sevilla. I was surprised because he is a famous international referee."

When Taylor arrived at the airport to leave Hungary on June 1, he was surrounded and insulted by many fans. The extremists even shouted "kill him" and threw water bottles and chairs at the English referee and his family. Later, Budapest airport announced that they had arrested and prepared criminal proceedings against a man accused of affray.

On the same day, Roma general manager Tiago Pinto continued to criticize Taylor. "We usually do not comment on situations like this, but after analyzing both the most obvious incidents and those that seem less obvious, the referee really had no disciplinary balance," he told Italian media.

The Professional Game Officials' Officials' Office (PGMOL) later said it was "appalled by the senseless and disgusting abuse" directed at Taylor and his family as they tried to get home from the Europa League final. Meanwhile, a Premier League spokesman said Taylor was "one of the most experienced and successful referees in the game", and vowed to "continue to offer our full support" to the 44-year-old.

Italian media dubbed the incident the "Taylor Affair" and suggested that Mourinho bore some responsibility for creating such a tense atmosphere among Roma fans. Meanwhile, the British referees' support organisation Ref Support UK called on UEFA to take drastic measures to protect referees, while former English referee Mark Halsey called for Mourinho to be severely punished.

According to British newspaper Sunsport , Mourinho faces the risk of being banned for five matches for questioning the impartiality of UEFA referees. Sky Sports said UEFA is waiting for the referee's match report before deciding whether to punish the Portuguese coach or not.
