AI camera shoots without lens

Bjorn Karmann, an interaction and experience designer in Amsterdam, introduced Paragraphica, a camera that uses location data and artificial intelligence (AI) to create a photo of a location at a certain time, Futurism reported on June 1.

Paragraphica maps out where the photographer is standing, then converts it into an AI image. The camera exists as a physical prototype and also as a virtual one on a website for those interested in trying it out, Karmann said on Twitter.

Three dials on the camera allow the photographer to control data and AI parameters to change the look of the photo, similar to how a traditional camera works. According to Paragraphica's official website, the camera works by collecting data from its location via an Application Programming Interface (API), using information about the address, weather, time, and nearby locations.

Paragraphica compiles all this data to create a text detailing where and when the photo was taken. When the user presses the shutter button, the camera uses AI to convert the text into an image. The resulting image is not just a snapshot, but a complex and nuanced reflection of where the user is and how the AI model sees that location.

Karmann says Paragraphica is just a passion art project. “I want to be clear that this is a passion art project. I don’t intend to create a product or challenge photography. Instead, the project is about the role of AI in an age of creative tension,” Karmann says.
