In the 2022-2023 school year, Ho Chi Minh City will pilot the "Digital Classroom" model in 4 classrooms of Thanh An Primary School (Can Gio District) and 6 classrooms of Trung Lap Thuong Primary School (Cu Chi District), with a total of 104 English lessons and 62 IT lessons. In the second semester of the 2023-2024 school year, the model will continue to be expanded to many schools in the city, while expanding the number of students participating in the lessons - including students from Muong Khuong and Si Ma Cai districts (Lao Cai province).
One teacher, many classes
The Music class of class 4/1, Thanh An Primary School (Thanh An Commune, Can Gio District) started with an activity to get acquainted with new classmates and teachers. Le Ngoc Gia Vy, a student of class 4/1, said: "I get to study with my friends from Trung Lap Thuong Primary School, Cu Chi District, so I'm happy and excited. Every time a student in my class gives a correct answer, the students from the other school also clap and give hearts, so I'm very excited." To create a joyful atmosphere for the class, students at Thanh An Primary School were asked by the teacher to simulate the swimming movements of dolphins with their hands, and students from Trung Lap Thuong Primary School made gestures simulating the sound of murmuring ocean waves. Although the "dolphins", "ocean waves" and the teacher could only see each other through the projector screen, the two classes interacted very smoothly, the classroom atmosphere became lively with applause and comments from students of the two schools for each other. This is one of the lessons following the "Digital Classroom" model, piloted by the Department of Education and Training in coordination with the Ho Chi Minh City Digital Transformation Support and Consulting Center from December 2022.
According to Mr. Le Huu Binh, Principal of Thanh An Primary School, the school has a Music teacher, but organizing lessons in the form of online combined with direct (with an assistant teacher assigned to the classroom - PV) helps promote the initiative of students, thereby improving the effectiveness of innovative teaching methods for teachers in the school. As for Trung Lap Thuong Primary School, Principal Nguyen Van Toi informed that the "Digital Classroom" model has the participation of good teachers with experience in online teaching assigned by the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, helping to solve the problem of lack of talented teachers in schools in suburban areas, especially in the subjects of English and Information Technology.
Thanks to the online format, students from many places participate in lessons taking place at the same time, helping schools save on teacher recruitment resources, thereby narrowing the gap between schools in suburban areas and schools in the inner city.
Develop students' individual abilities
Ms. Lam Hong Lam Thuy, Head of the Primary Education Department (Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training), said that Ho Chi Minh City has many models promoting the policy of digital transformation in education and training, from innovating teaching methods to testing and evaluating students, actively applying advanced technologies in the world to improve the quality of teaching in general schools. In particular, the "Digital Classroom" model not only solves the problem of teacher shortage in schools in remote, isolated and island areas but also helps reduce the pressure on recruiting teachers for specific subjects such as Music, Fine Arts, Foreign Languages, and Information Technology in primary schools throughout the city.
From a management perspective, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City Nguyen Bao Quoc acknowledged that the "Digital Classroom" model has initially met the requirements for teaching and developing students' qualities and abilities according to the orientation of the 2018 General Education Program. Through the activities of "learning while playing, playing while learning", the interaction between students and teachers, between students in the same class is promoted, helping the classroom atmosphere become more exciting, promoting the proactive role of students. In addition, lessons taught by good teachers with solid professional knowledge will gradually help colleagues in suburban areas develop their skills, thereby improving the quality of education, solving difficulties and limitations in the process of self-improvement of expertise, and approaching new teaching methods. However, the assessment of students according to the "Digital Classroom" model is still carried out directly, based on the teaching practice of schools, ensuring the requirements of the general capacity to be achieved in the program.
