The world's largest commercial wind turbine, a 16 MW unit, was installed in just 24 hours by manufacturer Goldwind, the company announced on November 23. Chinese companies are racing to build larger turbines. Larger turbines allow for more energy to be generated per rotation. Currently, the GWH252-16MW is the world's largest commercially available turbine. However, Goldwind's advantage lies in its ability to complete installation faster, making it more financially viable, according to Interesting Engineering .

As turbines get larger, they need to be installed at greater depths in the ocean, making the job more difficult. Goldwind’s latest achievement demonstrates the feasibility of a rapid installation process, paving the way for wind projects to come online faster. In September, the company also announced the installation of a 14.3 MW wind turbine in just 30 hours.

Another 16 MW wind turbine from Goldwind also set a record in early September when it produced 384.1 megawatt hours of electricity in 24 hours at the Zhangpu Liuao wind farm in Fujian province during Typhoon Haiku, which had winds of up to 85 km/h. The amount of electricity from one unit of this turbine is enough to supply 170,000 households. The turbine has a rotor diameter of 252 m and a blade area of up to 50,000 m2.

Goldwind manufactures its turbines in a carbon-neutral smart factory that uses wind power and solar panels. The company says its products are environmentally friendly, designed to be extremely lightweight, easy to disassemble and recycle. The parts are also shipped scientifically to reduce packaging.
