Construction of Ca Mau - Dat Mui Expressway, traffic route to Hon Khoai Island and Hon Khoai Dual-Use Port commenced

On the morning of August 19, in Dat Mui commune (Ca Mau province), the Ministry of National Defense in coordination with the People's Committee of Ca Mau province solemnly held the groundbreaking ceremony for the Ca Mau - Dat Mui expressway, the traffic route to Hon Khoai island and Hon Khoai dual-use port. The ceremony was connected online with the main bridge in Hanoi and 80 bridges nationwide.

These are key projects of Ca Mau province in the program of groundbreaking and inauguration ceremonies of 250 large-scale works and projects organized online by the Central Government nationwide to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (September 2, 1945 - September 2, 2025).

Attending the ceremony were General Phan Van Giang, Politburo member, Minister of National Defense ; former leaders of the Party, State and representatives of leaders of ministries, central branches, provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region.

On the side of Ca Mau province, the ceremony was attended by Member of the Party Central Committee, Head of the Provincial National Assembly Delegation Lu Van Hung; Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee Nguyen Ho Hai; Alternate Member of the Party Central Committee, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the province Huynh Quoc Viet; Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Council Pham Van Thieu; Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Pham Thanh Ngai.

The Ca Mau - Dat Mui expressway, the traffic route to Hon Khoai island and Hon Khoai dual-use port were assigned by the Central Government to the Ministry of National Defense as the investor.

The Ca Mau – Dat Mui Expressway is 81km long, with 4 lanes, 2 continuous emergency lanes, and a design speed of 100km/h, divided into 2 independent projects: Ca Mau – Cai Nuoc Expressway Project (42km) and Cai Nuoc – Dat Mui Expressway Project (39km). In particular, there will be a cable-stayed bridge over the Cua Lon River, 1,500m long.

Connecting to the end of the Cai Nuoc – Dat Mui expressway is the 18.22km long traffic route to Hon Khoai island, the starting point connects to the Ca Mau – Dat Mui expressway and the end point connects to the Hon Khoai dual-use general port. The project is designed according to the sea-crossing bridge plan including 04 lanes for motor vehicles, the bridge width is 17.5m, the load capacity meets the demand for transporting goods by container.

This will be the longest sea-crossing bridge in Southeast Asia, a symbol of Vietnam's image on the world map with a highly aesthetic design creating a unique architectural highlight for the southernmost province of the country.


Equipment and machinery were mobilized at the groundbreaking ceremony.

The Hon Khoai Dual-Use Port Project is built on Hon Khoai Island, Dat Mui Commune with a construction scale of 01 wharf 1,000m long, capacity 20 million tons/year (receiving ships up to 250,000 DWT); dredging to open a new shipping channel about 5,000m long, 230m wide, turning basin 800m in diameter.


Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Pham Thanh Ngai spoke at the ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Pham Thanh Ngai emphasized: The Ca Mau - Dat Mui expressway will seamlessly connect the expressway from Cao Bang - Lang Son to Dat Mui Ca Mau - the southernmost point of the country. Along with that, the traffic route to Hon Khoai Island and Hon Khoai Dual-Use Port will connect the island cluster with the mainland, promoting and effectively exploiting its potential and unique advantages. This is a lever to develop the Hon Khoai island cluster to be strong in economy, stable in national defense and security, oriented to become the "southernmost continent" of the country according to the conclusion of General Secretary To Lam during his visit and work in Ca Mau province at the end of 2024. These projects and works are all strategic, opening up new development space, creating strong momentum and being an important breakthrough for Ca Mau province to rise up in the new era - the era of national rise.

On behalf of the leaders and people of Ca Mau province, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Pham Thanh Ngai respectfully thanked the attention and support of the Government, the Prime Minister, the Ministry of National Defense and the Central Ministries, Departments and Branches, especially the very important strategic directions of General Secretary To Lam for Ca Mau. The leaders of Ca Mau province committed to continue to promptly complete all site clearance work, relocate technical infrastructure, and disburse the capital plan for site clearance work to meet the prescribed schedule. Carry out well the propaganda and mobilization work for people directly affected by land, houses and other assets, complete the site clearance work well, and resolutely not let the project wait for the site. In addition, promptly resolve arising problems, implement compensation and resettlement support publicly, objectively and transparently.

Speaking at the ceremony, General Phan Van Giang, Politburo member and Minister of National Defense emphasized: To ensure the successful completion of assigned tasks in the next implementation process, the Ministry of National Defense hopes that the Party and State leaders will continue to pay attention and direct; at the same time, we hope to receive the coordination and support of the central ministries, branches, the Provincial Party Committee, the People's Council, the People's Committee of Ca Mau province and related localities, especially the consensus of the people in the project area, striving to complete the expressway projects before December 31, 2028; completing the traffic route connecting to Hon Khoai Island and Hon Khoai Dual-Use Port in the first half of 2029.

On this occasion, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Ca Mau province awarded Certificates of Merit to 10 collectives and 38 individuals with outstanding achievements in site clearance for the Ca Mau - Dat Mui expressway project.
