Since the end of November, farmers in Da Mi commune, Ham Thuan Bac district have started harvesting the 2023 coffee crop. Compared to previous years, this year's coffee prices have increased, combined with stable productivity, local farmers have earned large profits.
As one of the main crops in Da Mi commune, coffee has long been associated with the people of this land and brings a stable source of income to many farmers; currently, the whole commune has more than 1,050 hectares of coffee, most of which are in the harvesting stage. In recent years, in addition to paying attention to transferring scientific and technological advances, the Da Mi commune government has also encouraged farmers to boldly introduce hybrid coffee varieties such as high-yield 138 mango leaves, Thien Truong coffee, Truong Son TS5 coffee, etc. into production. Although they are new varieties, thanks to Da Mi's suitable climate, hybrid coffee varieties have quickly adapted and yielded superior yields compared to traditional coffee varieties, contributing to the continuous increase in the total coffee output in the locality. Notably, this year, thanks to relatively favorable weather, combined with investment in scientific care and balanced fertilization, not only hybrid coffee varieties, but most of the traditional coffee areas in Da Mi commune have flowered early, simultaneously, with a high fruit set rate, giving stable yields compared to 2022. Currently, farmers in the commune are entering the peak coffee harvest season with yields ranging from 2.7 - 3 tons/ha, equal to last year's coffee crop. For many farmers in Da Mi commune, coffee is the main source of income for their families, so stable coffee yields have brought them excitement. And this excitement has been multiplied by the sudden increase in coffee prices this year. Since the beginning of the harvest season, traders have been buying coffee beans at home at prices ranging around 60,000 VND/kg, an increase of 20,000 VND compared to last year.
Mr. Nguyen Anh Toan - Chairman of the People's Committee of Da Mi commune said that in the past, coffee prices often fell partly because farmers paid in advance for materials, fertilizers and pesticides from traders, and when harvesting, they were forced to lower prices; moreover, the local coffee market used to be mainly in Lam Dong province, because individuals negotiated with businesses, so prices were not guaranteed. However, recently, the number of coffee purchasing establishments in the area has increased significantly, and the local government has paid attention to mobilizing farmers to cooperate with businesses in production and consumption of products according to the value chain, so coffee output has gradually stabilized. In particular, some households with good economic conditions have proactively stocked up on coffee waiting for prices, thanks to which they have always sold at high prices. This year's coffee crop, with an average selling price of 60,000 VND/kg, each hectare of local farmers earns 160 - 180 million VND, minus expenses, the profit is 120 - 140 million, an increase of about 50 - 60 million VND compared to 2022...
“In previous years, due to unstable coffee prices and increasingly scarce harvesting labor, many farmers in the commune have abandoned this crop; there are also a few old coffee areas that people have proactively switched to growing durian or other fruit trees, so the commune's existing coffee area has gradually narrowed and decreased by nearly 400 hectares. However, this year, the high coffee price has encouraged farmers to focus on garden care, proactively replanting old coffee areas, and paying attention to investing in coffee restoration in areas that have just been harvested with the hope of continuing to have a successful coffee crop in the following years….”.
Mr. Nguyen Anh Toan - Chairman of Da Mi Commune People's Committee shared more.
