Changes in the highlands of Mu Cang Chai

Coming to Mu Cang Chai (Yen Bai province) in the middle of winter, the temperature at the top of Khau Pha pass is at 7 degrees Celsius, freezing cold. On the mountain slopes, the flowers of the giant peach tree (a type of wild peach, bright red) are blooming, standing out among the green mountains and forests, signaling a new spring is coming to this land with many hardships. Along the commune roads, many new houses built under the local project "Eliminating dilapidated houses" have been completed, bringing joy to the people here.

We climbed the steep slope to La Pan Tan commune, where the famous “Golden Raspberry” hill is located on the Vietnam tourism map. Meeting Ly A Nha, Secretary of the La Pan Tan village Party Cell, he said that the whole village has 16 households doing homestay tourism, many people doing services such as tour guides, motorbike taxis... have been trained in tourism, food hygiene and safety, creating a livelihood locally.

The children of the mountains and forests have known how to preserve and develop the heritage left by their ancestors, contributing to improving the lives of their villages. In addition to domestic tourists, foreign tourists also love to experience tourism products in the village such as plowing, fishing, and processing local products.

Mr. Trinh The Binh, Head of the Department of Culture and Information of Mu Cang Chai district, excitedly said: With many beautiful landscapes such as: raspberry hills, bamboo forests, dinosaur habitats, especially the Che Tao species and habitat conservation area, Khau Pha pass..., along with unique cultural features, imbued with the cultural identities of the H'Mong and Thai ethnic groups... Mu Cang Chai is attracting a large number of tourists.

In the coming time, the district will build and develop new and unique tourism products such as: Khen H'Mong festival, To Day flower festival, New Rice celebration festival, Son Tra festival... to attract domestic and international tourists to explore and experience, aiming to build Mu Cang Chai into a tourist district, a "Unique, safe, friendly" destination of Yen Bai province as well as the Northwest region.

Secretary of the District Party Committee Giang A Cau and we visited the medicinal mushroom growing model of Mu Cang Chai Edible and Medicinal Mushroom Production Limited Company in Hua Khat village.

From 2022, the company boldly invested more than 10 billion VND to build a mushroom production factory infrastructure system, on a total area of 4 hectares. On average, each year, it harvests and sells more than 250 tons of shiitake mushrooms to the market, earning more than 20 billion VND.

The company creates regular jobs for nearly 50 local workers, with salaries ranging from 4.5 to 6 million VND/person/month. In addition to the mushroom growing area, the unit also grows sprouts, sweet peppers, off-season vegetables... creating more jobs and diversifying products to serve the menu for tourists.

We visited the tomato growing model in La Khat and Cang Dong villages, Nam Khat commune with an area of over 9 hectares. This is a Beef tomato variety originating from Israel, grown on a large scale, with a fairly high yield of over 50 tons/ha, earning about 1.8 billion VND/ha, creating jobs for 50 workers.

Secretary of the District Party Committee Giang A Cau affirmed that if every commune were like Nam Khat, mobilizing local labor resources, producing typical products (tomatoes, flowers, mushrooms, temperate vegetables), combining production and consumption in a synchronous chain, then the people in the highlands would no longer be poor.

In addition to growing mushrooms, tomatoes, and temperate vegetables, Nam Khat commune now has 75 hectares of roses grown by 21 households. The average yield is about 190,000 flowers/ha, generating an income of about 300 million VND/ha, creating jobs for 350-400 local workers.

According to the Chairman of the People's Committee of Thao A Phenh Commune, thanks to the conversion of economic models suitable to the soil, people have land to lease to enterprises, many households have jobs, helping to improve people's lives significantly. With investment capital from hunger eradication and poverty reduction programs, roads to the villages: Na Khat, Pu Cang, Xua Long, Pao Khat... are paved with concrete, 100% of households use the national grid.

The primary school and secondary school were funded 30 billion VND by the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam to build new ones, helping H'Mong children in the commune have a spacious place to study.

Walking in the middle of the vast mountains and forests, amidst the deep green of the seemingly endless pine forests, one can feel the sustainable forest protection consciousness of the local people. Every year, thanks to the forest management at the household, team, and community level, the people of Mu Cang Chai are paid more than 50 billion VND from the Forest Protection and Development Fund. Thanks to the abundant upstream water, the hydroelectric plants on the Nam Kim and Nam Mu rivers, and the hydroelectric plants on the Da River can generate their full capacity. Nature and people live together in harmony, Mu Cang Chai is changing day by day on the path of development.
