US Ambassador Learns About War Legacy in Vietnam

On December 10 in Hanoi, US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc E. Knapper and the Harvard Kennedy School delegation visited and worked with the National Archives Center III, Department of State Records and Archives. Here, Mr. Knapper visited the exhibition area and viewed the B-file of martyr Dang Thuy Tram.

Dr. Dang Thuy Tram was born into an intellectual family in Hue and grew up in Hanoi. Graduated from Hanoi Medical University, in 1966 the young doctor volunteered to go to battlefield B, then worked at Duc Pho District Hospital, Quang Ngai Province, a civilian infirmary but mainly treating wounded soldiers.

On June 22, 1970, during a business trip from the Ba To mountains to the plains, Dr. Dang Thuy Tram was ambushed by the enemy and sacrificed her life when she was not yet 28 years old.

The US Ambassador and the delegation were also introduced to the contents of the national treasures at the Center and visited the exhibition area "Paris Conference - Historical Negotiations", the exhibition "Youthful Relics"; the area displaying the national treasure "Sketch of the Vietnamese National Emblem by Artist Bui Trang Chuoc".

Mr. Dang Thanh Tung, Director of the State Records and Archives Department, expressed his hope that the US Embassy in Vietnam and Harvard Kennedy School would strengthen cooperation in publishing and introducing archival documents to the Vietnamese, US and world publics about the relationship between the two countries as well as the history and culture of the two peoples.

Ambassador Marc E. Knapper expressed his pleasure at visiting and studying documents at Vietnam's national archives and hoped that the parties would promote activities in the coming time. 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the normalization of Vietnam-US relations, the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, the 80th anniversary of the founding of Vietnam, and marks the 80th anniversary of the special relationship between President Ho Chi Minh and the United States. According to Ambassador Marc E. Knapper, this is not only an opportunity to look back on the past but also a time to look forward to the future. He emphasized the importance of preserving historical values, learning from the past to build a better future.

Professor Anthony Saich, Harvard Kennedy School and members shared information about the activities of searching for and returning relics under the "Undiscovered Vietnam War Heritage" Project, especially the provision of war relics to the National Steering Committee 515 in coordination with the US Embassy in Vietnam, the Department of Foreign Affairs (Ministry of National Defense) to return to veterans and their families on December 9, 2024. These activities aim to overcome the consequences of war, especially focusing on the search and collection of the remains of Vietnamese martyrs, while contributing to promoting cooperation between the two countries in the spirit of "putting the past behind, looking towards the future".

The parties also discussed the possibility of cooperation in promoting the collection of documents and relics of cadres who went to B, such as co-organizing exhibitions and returning relics in the coming time.
