Tran Vu Bao is the valedictorian of the Finance - Banking double major at Van Lang University. Recently, Bao moved many people when he brought his father's portrait with him on his graduation day.

The days when father and son gave each other a lunch box

More than a month ago, Bao took his father to the emergency room when he was in severe pain. At that moment, Bao had a bad feeling and prepared himself for the worst. Two weeks later, Bao's father passed away after battling liver cancer. Bao suppressed his grief to take care of the funeral and be a support for his mother and sister. Although he tried to be strong, this young man was in great pain because his father could not wait until the graduation ceremony as he wished.

Seven years ago, Bao also took his father to the hospital after a severe pain. At that time, the doctor diagnosed him with cirrhosis and he could only live a few more years if treated well. Not letting himself be sad and depressed for too long, Bao tried to study hard to please his father. Although he was sick, he still worked hard to drive a truck to deliver goods every day, earning money for his son to go to university. "My father often got up at 4am to make tea. At 6am, he went to deliver goods and came back in the evening. Although his health was not good, he always tried to work," Bao shared. In 2020, Bao became the valedictorian of the Finance - Banking major at Van Lang University and received a scholarship worth 100% of tuition in the first semester. Bao always felt pain in his heart about his father's illness, so he tried to study hard. During his four years at university, Bao did not stay in a rented house, but traveled about 30 km from his home (in Dong Nai province) to school every day to be as close to his father as possible. "I tried to manage my time very closely to study effectively and register for classes in the morning. I got up at 5am to prepare, and sometimes I stopped by my father's desk to ask for a strong cup of tea to wake up before going to school. After finishing my classes at the lecture hall, I went to the library to study documents until the afternoon. There were days when I had to hold meetings to organize events until 2-3am, but I still ran home to see my father, then woke up early the next day to continue studying," Bao shared. Bao was born and raised in his maternal hometown in Ca Mau province. In third grade, Bao followed his father to Dong Nai to study, while his mother and sister stayed at his maternal home. During this time, life was difficult, Bao's father's income from his job as a driver was not much, so he had to save a lot to make ends meet. "There was a day when my father only had money left to buy one lunch box. So my father and I shared the food. Although we were poor, I felt very warm and happy," Bao choked up as he recounted.

During his university studies, Bao was always highly focused, receiving scholarships worth 50-100% of tuition fees every semester. In addition, this young man was also active in the Youth Union and participated in organizing events in the faculty. Bao became the valedictorian of the double major in finance and banking with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.54/4.0. Bao's father focused on educating his children about tactful behavior, being observant, patient, and working and studying hard. Bao said that his father did not impose but was always patient in teaching his children. Therefore, this young man is always considered to be emotional and delicate. "Every time I bring home a certificate of merit or receive a scholarship, my father is very happy. When he knew I was the valedictorian, he promised to attend the graduation ceremony, but that could not happen. When he was alive, my father always focused on teaching his children every word, speech, and behavior, so I felt very secure and peaceful when he left this world," Bao confided. At the graduation ceremony on August 8, Bao held his father's portrait to school to receive his diploma. Bao hopes that somewhere, his father is still watching over him and is proud of his son. In the near future, Bao hopes to find a suitable job to be able to take care of his mother and sister. This double valedictorian also wishes to study for a master's degree. Master Pham Thi Nga, former assistant for student affairs at the Faculty of Finance and Banking at Van Lang University, commented: "Bao is an outstanding student of the faculty, has leadership qualities, behaves very delicately, and has good observation skills. In his studies, he is very intelligent, sharp in analyzing financial issues, and is often chosen by lecturers as a study assistant for the next course. Bao is very active and enthusiastic in movement activities and effectively organizes sports tournaments and events of the faculty." When Bao's father passed away, Master Nga went to his house to burn incense and was very impressed with this young man because of his toughness and strength as a spiritual support and protection for his mother and sister.
