Medical history showed that one year ago , Ms. C. often felt pain in the left hypochondrium, frequent bloating, and abdominal discomfort.
She went to a local hospital and was found to have a splenic cyst and was advised to have surgery, but she did not agree to the intervention.
Recently, the symptoms of abdominal pain appeared more frequently, affecting her health and life, so she decided to go to Xuyen A Vinh Long General Hospital for examination.

On March 13, specialist 2 Le Tong Ba, Deputy Head of the Department of General Surgery, Xuyen A General Hospital, Vinh Long, said that the results of the abdominal CT scan showed an abnormally enlarged spleen, occupying most of the left abdomen, accompanied by many large cysts. After consulting and assessing the patient's condition, the doctors decided to perform surgery to remove the entire spleen to remove the cyst. Because the patient's spleen was too large, the doctor chose an open surgery with an incision of about 15 cm, removing the entire spleen weighing 1,300 grams, which is 40 times larger than a normal spleen (weighing about 32 grams). Just one day after the surgery, the patient's health had recovered very well, with no more pain in the lower ribs or bloating, or abdominal discomfort as before. The patient was also able to move and eat normally. Splenic cysts are a rare lesion of the spleen, affecting only about 0.5% - 2% of the population.
Causes of spleen cyst formation
According to Dr. Ba, the cause of splenic tumors can be due to parasitic infections, mainly small tapeworms from animals such as dogs, cats, and rodents. In addition, it can be due to congenital cysts, lymphatic cysts, or vascular abnormalities. There are currently no specific preventive measures. However, to reduce the risk of disease, people should maintain personal hygiene, eat clean food, limit contact with sources of parasitic infection, and have regular health check-ups to detect abnormalities early.
"For patients with splenic cysts who have not yet been prescribed surgery, they should maintain a moderate lifestyle and avoid heavy labor. The disease can become dangerous if the cyst becomes infected, bleeds, or ruptures into nearby organs such as the stomach or colon," the doctor advised.
