Deaths are unevenly distributed, with 86% occurring in young adults up to people under 55 years of age in low- and middle-income countries.

According to a study by dozens of international stroke experts from the World Stroke Organization and the Lancet Neurology Commission, the global burden of stroke is huge, with the cost of treating stroke and lost income expected to increase from $891 billion per year in 2017 to $2.31 trillion by 2050.

Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide and causes disability, dementia and other health problems for millions of people each year, costing billions of dollars.
