Countries should develop AI that generates in their own languages

VietNamNetVietNamNet23/09/2023

The above message was shared by Mr. Ha Jung Woo, Head of Cloud Innovation Department of Naver Company (Korea), at the Vietnam Artificial Intelligence Day (AI4VN) 2023, held in Ho Chi Minh City on September 22.

Generative AI is a form of artificial intelligence that is capable of generating new content and ideas in various forms such as text, images, videos, music. From there, AI can create new songs, drugs, movies, games... with the use of large language models (LLMs).

According to a recent McKinsey estimate, generative AI could contribute $4.4 trillion to the global economy. The study was based on 60,000 applications of generative AI across different industries.

According to Mr. Ha Jung Woo, the major language models for developing generative AI currently use English, so when the model runs on other languages, it will be incomplete and have errors, and because it is in English, when used, it creates unnecessary bias, especially cultural bias.

Therefore, he believes that mastering data and technology is an important factor that many countries consider in the future, overcoming the risk of dependence on other countries. For example, in Korea, Naver has also created a large Korean language model to serve the government and domestic businesses when deploying AI applications.

Sharing the same view, Dr. Dao Duc Minh, General Director of VinBigdata, also believes that Vietnamese people can also create domestically generated AI products to help ensure safety, information accuracy and best serve the government and society...

According to Mr. Dao Duc Minh, when chatGPT was launched at the end of 2022, it created an underground wave of competition between countries and large corporations in researching and launching generative AI models and large language models.

Specifically, in the US, in addition to OpenAI's chatGPT tool, there are other generative AI models such as Google's Bard and Amazon's Titan. In China, there is Baidu's Earnie Bot, Sense Time's SenseChat, Tencent's Hunyan. In Korea, there is Naver's HyperClova X...

Mr. Dao Duc Minh said that developing a large language model to apply to generative AI is not a simple task and costs a lot of money. If generative AI is applied based on large language model platforms available in the world, Vietnam is at risk of facing many risks. For example, with large foreign language models, Vietnamese data only accounts for a very small proportion, mainly English, so it is difficult to ensure accuracy, data security, and suitability for business needs...

For example, large foreign language models have hundreds of billions of parameters. Running a real-world model requires a huge computational infrastructure, but the quality is not commensurate because the AI model can give wrong answers, especially in historical knowledge, culture, and issues that are specific to each country.

For this reason, VinBigdata decided to build a large language model in Vietnamese, with the goal of ensuring data security, improving accuracy, reducing costs, and adapting to the domestic situation. The team of experts built a model with hundreds of times fewer parameters than chatGPT, but it was built on the amount of data of Vietnamese people.

The model can answer local-specific questions with high accuracy. Specifically, when asked about the law with two different violations, the chatGPT model had the same answer and general content. Meanwhile, the AI model using Vietnamese data can answer accurately based on laws, decrees, fines, information sources... very specifically.

To prove this accuracy, Dr. Dao Duc Minh gave an example when asking about the work "The Beggar's Wife" in Vietnamese literature on chatGPT and the Vietnamese language model developed by VinBigdata, the result of VinBigdata's model was completely accurate while ChatGPT's answer was unclear.

VinBigdata's representative also said that mastering domestically generated AI is important because it can help the Government master content, avoid misinformation, ensure national data security, and bring Vietnamese technology to the world.

Countries are ready to cooperate with Vietnam to develop AI technology . Representatives of the consulates said that countries are ready to cooperate with Vietnam to develop artificial intelligence (AI) technology, and emphasized the need to develop AI responsibly.
