US Attorney General Pam Bondi said a series of recent attacks on the assets of billionaire Elon Musk's electric car company Tesla amounted to 'terrorism'.
“The violent attack on Tesla property is nothing short of domestic terrorism,” Bondi said in a statement on March 18, according to AFP. She added that the US Department of Justice had filed several charges against the perpetrators, some of which involve charges that carry a minimum sentence of five years in prison.
Investigators on March 18 examined the scene at a Tesla facility in Las Vegas, Nevada (USA) after an individual used an incendiary device to set fire to several vehicles there.
"We will continue our investigations... into those involved in these attacks, including those working behind the scenes to coordinate and fund this crime," Ms Bondi stressed.
Bondi made the statement after a fire broke out at a Tesla facility in Las Vegas, damaging five vehicles, according to Las Vegas police. "Upon arrival, officers found several vehicles completely burned and the word 'Resist' spray-painted on the building," police said in a statement on March 17.
Billionaire Elon Musk also shared a video of the arson at the Las Vegas facility on social media X, calling it “domestic terrorism.” He wrote: “Tesla only makes electric cars and has done nothing to deserve these attacks.”
In an interview with Fox News on March 18, billionaire Musk said he was "shocked" by the attacks on Tesla cars as well as "the hatred and violence from the left." "Tesla is a peaceful company, we have never done anything harmful," he affirmed.
Several Tesla vehicles, dealerships and charging stations have been vandalized in the US and Europe in recent weeks. US President Donald Trump expressed support for Mr Musk last week, saying the perpetrators would be caught.
Billionaire Elon Musk is one of President Trump's closest advisers and is at the forefront of controversial efforts to cut parts of the US government.
Analysts say billionaire Musk's political efforts, including supporting far-right parties in Europe and sharing conspiracy theories online, could seriously damage Tesla's traditionally liberal market base, according to AFP.
