63 officers from the Level 2 Field Hospital and 184 officers from the 3rd Engineer Team departed for a United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan and the Abyei region.
On the morning of September 24, in Hanoi, the Ministry of National Defense held a ceremony to send off Level 2 Field Hospital No. 6 and Engineering Team No. 3 to carry out the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan and the Abyei region.
Attending the ceremony were Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan; Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Deputy Minister of National Defense, Head of the Inter-Sectoral Working Group, Head of the Ministry of National Defense's Steering Committee on participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations; representatives of ministries, branches, central agencies and international partners.
Ready to do the mission
Regarding the preparations for the two units to carry out their missions, Major General Pham Manh Thang, Director of the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department, said that Level 2 Field Hospital No. 6 has an official staff of 63 comrades, who have been fully trained in politics, military, technical logistics, medical expertise, peacekeeping knowledge, especially practical training, close to the developments of the situation and tasks at the mission; English training and some specialized peacekeeping contents such as international trauma first aid, air medical transport, prevention and combat of sexual violence, explosive identification, etc., fully meeting the criteria of the United Nations and the requirements for performing the mission.
Also deployed this time was Engineering Team No. 3 of the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department, with an official strength of 184 comrades, including 18 female soldiers.
The 3rd Engineer Team has been trained in specialized fields, foreign languages, medical training, logistics, engineering, etc.; the joint training of the Engineer Team's operations is organized to match the local situation and the tasks assigned by the mission based on the results of the implementation of the tasks of the 2nd Engineer Team.
In addition, the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department coordinated with partner countries to organize specialized training for Engineering Team No. 3, ensuring sufficient capacity to perform engineering tasks in infrastructure construction, engineering works, humanitarian support activities at the mission as well as the requirements of the United Nations according to assigned functions and tasks.
The Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defense have directed the purchase of sufficient goods, equipment, consumables, and spare parts to ensure the supply of Engineering Team No. 3.
Major General Pham Manh Thang affirmed that up to now, 100% of officers and staff of Level 2 Field Hospital No. 6 and Engineering Team No. 3 are mentally secure, have determined their tasks well, have completed all preparations, and are ready to depart to carry out their missions.
Step by step expanding forces and areas participating in peacekeeping
On behalf of the Party and State leaders, delivering a speech to encourage the officers and soldiers of the two units before their departure, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan commended and highly appreciated the results achieved in Vietnam's participation in UN peacekeeping activities over the past 10 years; affirming that this is a bright spot in multilateral diplomacy of the Party, State, People's Army and People's Public Security of Vietnam; thereby demonstrating Vietnam's responsibility to the international community, contributing to responding to traditional and non-traditional challenges in the region and the world.
The Vice President said that the Party and State always trust, are proud of and honor the achievements of Vietnam's forces participating in UN peacekeeping operations, including the Level 2 Field Hospital and the Engineering Team.
“The Vietnamese contingent of officers and soldiers participating in UN peacekeeping operations has constantly strived and overcome all difficulties and challenges to complete the assigned tasks; clearly demonstrating the mettle, intelligence, personality and dignity of the Vietnamese people, which has been recognized and highly appreciated by the United Nations and international partners; and has been cared for, supported and followed by compatriots and comrades at home. You are the “messengers of peace” at the United Nations, contributing to shining the image of the country, the Vietnamese people, and the image of Uncle Ho’s soldiers in the new era,” the Vice President emphasized.
The Vice President expressed his belief that the units deployed to the mission area will continue the tradition and inherit the achievements of the previous peacekeeping forces; promote their bravery, intelligence and capacity in carrying out the noble tasks assigned by the Party, State, Army and people, meeting the requirements of the United Nations, worthy of the tradition of Uncle Ho's soldiers.
On this occasion, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan expressed her sincere thanks to the United Nations, partner countries and international organizations, and hoped that partners would continue to support Vietnam in preparing forces and implementing missions at peacekeeping missions.
In order for Vietnam to participate more deeply in UN peacekeeping activities, the Vice President suggested that the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Public Security closely coordinate with all levels and sectors to continue researching and performing well a number of tasks, including researching and advising the Party and State to perfect the legal framework for participating in UN peacekeeping activities; and paying attention to the regime and policies for officers and soldiers.
Research and strategic advisory work needs to be effectively implemented to participate more deeply in peacekeeping activities; gradually expand the forces, areas, and participating positions, strive to participate in command and management positions at the United Nations Headquarters and mission areas where Vietnam has strengths; maintain and increase the proportion of female soldiers participating in peacekeeping forces.
The Vice President also requested to improve the quality of force preparation and training in all aspects, especially in terms of expertise, peacekeeping operations, foreign language proficiency, soft skills, and survival skills; ensure security and safety at the highest level; promote the spirit of autonomy, self-confidence, self-reliance, self-reliance, and national pride; cooperate closely with friendly forces to improve work efficiency; share experiences, mobilize international resources, and move towards full initiative in capacity to participate in United Nations peacekeeping cooperation agencies and mechanisms.
On behalf of all officers and staff of Level 2 Field Hospital No. 6 and Engineering Team No. 3, Lieutenant Colonel Tran Anh Duc, Director of Level 2 Field Hospital No. 6 expressed his honor and pride at being trusted, selected and assigned to participate in peacekeeping activities; affirmed that he will always be absolutely loyal to the Party, the Fatherland and the people, to the revolutionary goals and ideals, and be ready to receive and excellently complete all assigned tasks.
Along with that, the soldiers of the two units will strive to improve their qualifications in all aspects; inherit and promote the experience of previous generations; uphold the spirit of internal and international solidarity; do a good job of propaganda to strongly spread the good traditional cultural values of the country, the Vietnamese people and the noble qualities of Uncle Ho's soldiers in the new era to international friends.
