National Museum of History opens special exhibition "The Country and Rivers Connected in One Strip"

On the morning of April 22, 2025, at the National Museum of History, the opening ceremony of the thematic exhibition “The Country and Rivers Unite” took place. The exhibition is a practical activity to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 – April 30, 2025).

Attending the opening ceremony were Prof. Dr. Luu Tran Tieu - Chairman of the National Cultural Heritage Council; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Hoai Son - Standing Member of the National Assembly's Committee on Culture and Education; Mr. Pham Dinh Phong - Deputy Director of the Department of Cultural Heritage; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Mai Hung - Vice President of the Vietnam Historical Science Association; Mr. Duong Trung Quoc - Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Historical Science Association; Dr. Vu Thi Minh Huong - Vice President of the UNESCO Memory of the World Committee for the Asia-Pacific Region, Member of the National Cultural Heritage Council; Dr. Nguyen Van Doan - Director of the National Museum of History; representatives of a number of museums and relics, along with the participation of news agencies, newspapers, central and Hanoi television stations. Also present was historical witness Sergeant Ngo Si Nguyen, the number 1 gunner on tank number 390 - the Liberation Army tank that crashed through the main gate of the Independence Palace at noon on April 30, 1975.

The General Offensive and Uprising in the Spring of 1975, culminating in the historic Ho Chi Minh campaign, ended the 21-year long resistance war against the US to save the country, opening a new era for the Vietnamese people - the era of independence, unification, and the whole country moving towards socialism.

With nearly 150 typical documents, images and artifacts, the exhibition is presented through three main content sections:

Part 1: Desire for unity:

Introducing the country's context after the Geneva Agreement in 1954, the country entered the period of building Socialism in the North and fighting for peace and unification in the South, shown through a number of typical artifacts and images such as: Image of Hien Luong Bridge across Ben Hai River, the temporary border between the two regions of North and South Vietnam from July 1954; Panoramic image of Thai Nguyen steel mill built and put into operation in June 1959...

Part 2: Vietnam is one – Vietnamese people are one:

Introducing the wise leadership of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh; the heroic fighting spirit of the army and people of the whole country; the support from the great rear in the North and the strong wave of support from progressive people around the world, through typical documents, artifacts and images such as: The baton of President Ho Chi Minh used to conduct the symphony orchestra, setting the rhythm of the song "Solidarity"; The letter of determination of students of Hanoi Medical University volunteering to be ready to take on any job, go anywhere when the country needs to contribute to defeating the American invaders; The flag of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam of the National Liberation Front delegation of South Vietnam led by Professor Nguyen Van Hieu visiting the North in 1962; photo of Cuban President Fidel Castro and the delegation visiting the liberated area of ​​South Vietnam in Quang Tri in September 1973...

Part 3: The country is one:

Introducing the important historical milestones of the Spring of 1975: the image of the Liberation Army dominating from Buon Ma Thuot, Hue, Da Nang to Saigon - Gia Dinh. The flag of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam flying on the roof of the Independence Palace - the workplace of the President of the Republic of Vietnam at 11:30 on April 30, 1975; the National Reunification Consultative Conference opening in Saigon - Gia Dinh city, November 15, 1975; the opening ceremony of the first session - the Unified National Assembly, June 25, 1976 are sacred moments, marking the complete victory of the aspiration for unification.

At the opening ceremony of the thematic exhibition, sharing about the historic moment on April 30, 1975, Sergeant Ngo Si Nguyen, Brigade 203, Corps 13, was the number 1 gunner and also 1 of 4 people on tank 390 that crashed through the gate of the Independence Palace at 10:45 a.m. on April 30, 1975, emotionally said: “ We are just very ordinary soldiers, but history has favored us by letting us be present in the first moments of the great moment. As historian Duong Trung Quoc once said: during the 21 years of resistance against the US, tank 390 was the first vehicle to 'reach the finish line'. We are fortunate to have contributed a small part to the glorious victory of the nation".

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr. Nguyen Van Doan said: “The exhibition of the Land and Rivers together helps the public have the opportunity to access typical and valuable documents and artifacts that are being preserved at the National Museum of History. Through this, it arouses in every Vietnamese citizen, especially the young generation, the pride and determination to protect national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and the desire to contribute to the development of the country, bringing our country firmly into deep international integration, entering a new era of development”.
