Political “storm” in Korea: 45 PPP members proposed to be dismissed as MPs

On July 25, a lawmaker from the ruling Democratic Party (DP) in South Korea submitted a resolution calling on the National Assembly to dismiss 45 lawmakers from the opposition People's Power Party (PPP), accusing them of acting as "human shields" to prevent authorities from arresting former President Yoon Suk Yeol last January.

According to a VNA reporter in Seoul, the resolution was submitted by MP Park Chan Dae, who is running for the position of DP Chairman, emphasizing that PPP MPs have seriously obstructed law enforcement activities.

Specifically, 45 PPP lawmakers are said to have gathered outside the residence of Mr. Yoon Suk Yeol on January 6, when the agency investigating corruption against high-ranking officials was trying to execute an arrest warrant for him - who is suspended from the presidency and awaiting an impeachment ruling from the Constitutional Court.

Among the PPP lawmakers named are senior figures such as former party chairman Kim Gi Hyeon, lawmakers Na Kyung Won and Yoon Sang Hyun.

According to Korean law, the dismissal of a member of parliament is only effective if approved by at least two-thirds of the total number of incumbent members of parliament./.
