The Times of Israel online newspaper quoted a statement from the country's military stating: "The commander of Unit 8200, Brigadier General Yossi Sariel, has informed his commanders and subordinates of his intention to terminate his position... This officer will end his role in the near future."

Unit 8200 is a secret unit responsible for decoding and analyzing intercepted information and other intelligence.

On the same day, Israeli media released a copy of Brigadier General Sariel's resignation letter, in which he asked for "forgiveness" for "failing to fulfill the assigned mission" on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel, killing about 1,200 people.

Following the October 7 incident, the Israeli Military Intelligence Service was plunged into a crisis that forced its commander, Major General Aharon Haliva, to announce his resignation in April 2024. According to the Israeli military, Mr. Haliva requested his resignation because the unit failed to prevent Hamas attacks.

Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces has denied reports that Israel's army chief of staff, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, is planning to resign in December, calling it "false and baseless."

“The chief of staff is now fully focused on conflict management, leading the army against our enemies and achieving our objectives,” the IDF statement said.

Minutes earlier, Israel's Channel 12 news channel reported that Chief of Staff Halevi was preparing to resign at the end of December, citing sources close to the official.

Lt. Gen. Halevi has repeatedly accepted full responsibility for failing to prevent the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023. He assumed the post of Chief of the General Staff in January 2023. Normally, IDF commanders serve for three years, but many serve for four years.

Regarding the developments of the conflict in Gaza, according to Brigadier General Itzik Cohen, commander of the IDF's 162nd Division tasked with attacking the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, the Hamas Brigade in this city was defeated.

According to Mr. Cohen, the IDF attacks on Hamas' Rafah Brigade killed at least 2,308 fighters of the group and destroyed more than 13 kilometers of tunnels. In addition, four Israeli battalions were deployed and completed control of the entire Rafah.

Hamas has not commented on this information from the IDF.
