Used to be addicted to games
Tuan said he was born in Van Ly commune, Ly Nhan district, Ha Nam province, where most of his peers go to work early after finishing junior high school. “I used to be addicted to games. After school at noon, I went to the internet cafe, and at night, I connected to the neighbor's wifi with a group of friends to play games. When I was in high school, I still skipped school to play games. I didn't even see my teachers for nearly a month in the first year of 10th grade. At the end of 10th grade, my average score was near the bottom of the class. At that time, everyone thought that graduating from high school was lucky, not thinking about becoming valedictorian later on,” Tuan recalled.
In June 2023, Tuan became the valedictorian of the Mechatronics Engineering Technology major at the University of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
When he received bad results, Tuan woke up and started to study hard. In 11th grade, Tuan focused on studying, especially chemistry. In the summer of 11th grade, Tuan asked his teacher to let him join the chemistry team to study at an advanced level. In the first few practice tests, Tuan's score was always the lowest in the group of nearly 10 students.
“But with his efforts and hard work in doing the exercises assigned by the teacher, Tuan was in the top 5 in the final exam to select the team. After that, Tuan won third prize in the Ha Nam provincial excellent student competition in chemistry,” Tuan recounted.
Tuan said that his time in college was a time of personal change. During this time, Tuan started reading self-help books (books with content that helps readers improve and develop themselves). The lesson Tuan learned was to put himself in a difficult position, get out of his comfort zone and gradually improve himself day by day.
“At first, I was very shy, I didn’t understand the lesson and didn’t dare ask the lecturer. But then, I tried and received a lot of help from the teachers. Overcoming my fear and shyness, I decided to join the presentation club to talk a lot and stand on stage to present my thoughts. Thanks to that, I gradually improved my speaking ability and became more confident,” Tuan shared.
Tuan has a special passion for scientific research.
After much effort and hard work, Tuan graduated as valedictorian of the Mechatronics Engineering major with a GPA of 3.81/4.0. Tuan said that there was no special secret to becoming valedictorian, but only focused on 5 factors: setting goals, diligence, boldly asking the lecturer when he did not understand the lesson, searching for more information related to the lesson on the internet and learning from the experiences of his seniors.
“Before each semester, I set goals, which motivates me to move forward. I try to solve a huge amount of problems in analysis and algebra, and then ask for more questions from other schools. When I don’t understand a certain part of the knowledge, I contact the lecturer for support,” Tuan shared.
The valedictorian added: “I also search for documents related to the topic I am studying on the internet to gain a deeper understanding. Asking for study experience is quite important, thanks to which I can anticipate situations and prepare my lessons more carefully.”
Passion for scientific research
In addition to studying well, Tuan is also passionate about scientific research. Tuan is a co-author of scientific articles, such as: "Improving YOLOv5 for detecting personal protective equipment at real construction sites" presented at the International Conference on Computing and Communication Technology 2023, "Identifying plant diseases based on local and global characteristics using Transformer" published in the Indonesian Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science 2024...
“Tuan is most interested in the topic of detecting people on drones for the purpose of search and rescue. This is the topic of my thesis with my group. We built a model of the drone, applied control, and combined it with artificial intelligence algorithms to detect victims,” Tuan shared.
This topic applies an integrated artificial intelligence model on drones, which is the first step in implementing drone rescue projects. With this topic, Tuan won first prize in the school-level scientific research competition and defended his thesis with excellent results.
Tuan is studying for his master's degree at the University of Paris Saclay, France.
Thanks to his study plan, active participation in movement activities, scientific research, improved foreign language skills and valedictorian graduation results, Tuan received a full scholarship for a master's degree at the University of Paris Saclay, France.
“My major and research direction is computer vision. Specifically, applying artificial intelligence to process problems with image input, then applying it to robots and systems in reality,” Tuan said.
Dr. Ha Manh Hung, lecturer at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, head of the Financial Technology and Digital Business Department, International School, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, who once guided Tuan in scientific research, commented: “Tuan always seeks and explores new knowledge, is not afraid of difficulties and challenges. Looking back at Tuan's 2 years of research in the laboratory, I realize that he always has a sense of responsibility, self-discipline, works very focused and proactively with clear plans and deadlines. More specifically, Tuan possesses confidence and courage.”
