The study predicts that about half of those jobs will be negatively impacted by AI, while the other half will be positively impacted.

“Your job could disappear completely… or artificial intelligence could enhance your job, so you would actually be more productive and your income could go up,” IMF CEO Kristalina Georgieva told AFP.

“And the more high-skilled jobs you have, the higher the impact,” Georgieva added.

The impact of AI is expected to be different in developing countries, with 40% of jobs in emerging markets being affected, compared to 26% of jobs in low-income countries.

While these labor markets are likely to see smaller initial impacts from AI, they are also less likely to benefit from productivity gains from AI tools, the report also said.

“We have to focus on helping low-income countries in particular develop faster so they can seize the opportunities that AI will bring,” Georgieva said. “So AI, yes, is a little scary. But it’s also a huge opportunity for everyone.”
