Experience the smart public transport system in Finland

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên05/11/2023

Starting at dawn, our group boarded the train from Pori, a small city in the southwest of Finland, to the capital Helsinki. Finland’s intercity train system is designed to make buying tickets extremely easy and quick, just using the website.

Intercity train station in Helsinki

In Finland, distances between points are not measured in physical lengths but in travel time. For example, the distance from Pori to Helsinki is 4 hours 8 minutes by train or 3 hours 11 minutes by bus...

After nearly 5 hours of experiencing the intercity train, Helsinki appeared before our eyes with unique architectural works, modern mixed with classic European style. Without skyscrapers, Helsinki still makes us go from overwhelmed to excited.

Unique architecture in the city center

Our group decided to use the public transport system to explore Helsinki.

At first, everything was a bit confusing, but thanks to the extremely smart guidance system, it only took a few minutes for a complete stranger to get acquainted and easily use public transportation here.

The means of transport in Helsinki include buses, trams and metro, all of which are part of a city-wide system called HSL.

In the public transport system, Helsinki is divided into 4 zones A, B, C and D, you just need to know which zone your upcoming address belongs to to buy a ticket for that zone.

This is extremely convenient for users, when you only buy 1 ticket (price about 3.10 euros) you can move freely within the selected area.

The metro station is always bustling with people.

In addition, this way it is also possible to control the city's traffic, making public transport always clear and accessible to everyone, even strangers.

And with just one regional ticket, you can use all public transport (bus, tram or metro) to get to your destination. The buses run continuously (every 15 - 20 minutes for buses, every 5 - 10 minutes for metro and tram).

Metro in Helsinki is very smartly connected

And to be sure of the answer "which route to take to get here", just use Google maps, an application that is very familiar to anyone who travels, or look it up on HSL and you can move around Helsinki with complete confidence.

Choose convenient, fast and especially clean means of transport.

If there is anything else impressive, it is the cozy coffee-drinking spaces found in any public transport station in the city. Perhaps it is also the reason why Finland is the country that consumes the most coffee in the world (on average, a Finn can use up to 5 cups of coffee/day).

Unique Temppeliaukio stone church

Temppeliaukio Rock Church In the heart of Helsinki, lies a remarkable church set amidst granite boulders. The church appears delicately, with a flat dome and a modest entrance, flanked by concrete walls, leading visitors through a corridor, then into a light-filled underground space carved directly into the bedrock.

The Finnish capital is one of the few cities in the world with a very special underground master plan. Nearly 10 million square meters of underground space form a vast network containing swimming pools, churches, shops and even a go-karting track. The Temppeliaukio Rock Church is a typical example of this type of architecture, located entirely underground, with a distinctive dome.

Stone church architecture with unique dome

Our group was lucky to visit the stone church for the first time during a Rehearsal Orchestra concert. The classical music was so harmonious in the overall classical atmosphere of the church.

Another place worth checking in when coming to Helsinki is the White Church, also known as Helsinki Cathedral, the symbol of the city. The White Church stands out with its neoclassical architecture, with white tones and blue domes. Built in 1830, the church has the influence of ancient Greek buildings with white columns and statues of the 12 apostles on the roof.

The National Library of Finland is also a must-see in Helsinki. Not only does it have unique architecture at famous locations, Helsinki also impresses with its knowledge libraries, pure Nordic architecture, and prominent white color and curved lines on the ceiling.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that you should experience Finland 's civilized public transport system to explore these wonderful places.
