Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just issued a decision on establishing a Working Group to implement the project "Research on the construction of Can Gio international transit port".

The working group consists of 15 members, led by Director of the City Department of Transport Tran Quang Lam. The working group is responsible for presiding over and coordinating with relevant departments, agencies and units to advise and propose to the City People's Committee in preparing and submitting the "Project to study and build Can Gio international transit port". Ho Chi Minh City expects the transit port to be a breakthrough boost for Can Gio's marine economy.

According to the project that has been completed by Ho Chi Minh City and the proposed unit, Can Gio international transit port is located in Phu Loi islet area (Thanh An commune, Can Gio district). This islet has more than 93 hectares of protective forest, of which more than 82 hectares are forested land and is surrounded by Thi Vai river and Theu river. This area is in the transition zone of Can Gio mangrove biosphere reserve, so the project does not affect the core forest area.

The project has a scale of about 7.2 km of wharf, receiving the world's largest container ship (24,000 TEU), throughput capacity of 10 - 15 million TEU, total investment estimated at about 6 billion USD. The project is divided into 7 investment phases, construction of phase 1 will begin in 2024 and be put into operation in 2027.

At the workshop on the project organized by the City People's Committee last weekend, Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Bui Xuan Cuong emphasized that the development history of Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City over the past 300 years is closely linked to the development of seaports and maritime transport... Can Gio District is geographically adjacent to the East Sea, located between two large river mouths, Soai Rap and Long Tau, and adjacent to Thi Vai River, which are important shipping routes of Group 4 seaports (South Central Coast seaport group), meeting all the conditions to develop national gateway seaports and international transit.

The early implementation of the construction of container ports of seaports in the period of 2021 - 2030 is necessary to meet the current and future import and export needs of goods from now to 2030 of Ho Chi Minh City in particular and the provinces of the southern key economic region in general.

Maritime and economic experts assess that the development of Can Gio international transit port into an international transit center will be the core to promote and develop Can Gio into a leading seaport and logistics center of the country. The project not only aims to implement the policy of moving Saigon port out of the inner city but also attracts shipping lines, transport companies, cargo owners, and logistics service businesses, and will soon turn the Cai Mep estuary into an international transit gateway, participating in the world transport supply chain.
