Good income from growing Ruby guava

(GLO)- After nearly 6 years of switching from growing vegetables to growing Ruby guava, Ms. Nguyen Thi Yen's family (Jro Ktu Dak Yang village, Yang Bac commune, Dak Po district) has had a stable income. By applying organic farming techniques, her guava products have also been certified as 3-star OCOP.

On the way to visit Ms. Yen's family's 1-hectare Ruby guava growing model, Mr. Dinh Hvu - Vice Chairman of Yang Bac Commune People's Committee said: This is the first fruit growing model of the commune with products certified with 3-star OCOP at the district level in 2024. In particular, in recent years, in addition to organic guava cultivation to increase product value and ensure safety for consumers' health, Ms. Yen has also actively shared her experience in growing guava in a safe direction and consuming products for guava growing households in the commune, contributing to helping households have a stable income.

Taking advantage of the cool weather, Ms. Yen and her husband harvested guava to send to customers. Ms. Yen said: Previously, on this area, she and her husband grew vegetables but their income was not stable. In 2019, after learning the knowledge and techniques of planting and caring for Ruby guava from people in the Western provinces, she and her husband decided to buy 100 guava seedlings to test on an area of ​​1 sao. After a period of planting, they realized that the Ruby guava variety adapted to the local weather and soil conditions, the trees grew and developed well, and were quickly harvested, so in mid-2020, her family decided to convert the entire remaining area to growing Ruby guava organically.

Accordingly, the couple composts cow manure with biological products to fertilize the garden and makes biological products from chili, alcohol, and ginger to prevent pests for guava trees. In addition, when the guava reaches a diameter of 2.5-3 cm, the couple uses specialized fruit bags to cover the fruit to avoid pests and insects. "Although this cultivation process is labor-intensive, the family does not have to spend money on pesticides. Thanks to that, the guava is crunchy, sweet, and safe for consumers," said Ms. Yen.

To achieve high yield and quality of guava, as soon as the guava bears small fruit, she cuts off the tops so that the tree can concentrate nutrients on the fruit, helping to avoid young fruit falling, which reduces productivity; at the same time, it helps stimulate the guava to bloom new flowers. Thanks to that, her family's guava garden produces fruit all year round. Accordingly, on average, each year, her family harvests nearly 20 tons of guava and sells it for 14-18 thousand VND/kg. After deducting expenses, her family makes a profit of about 250 million VND.

According to Ms. Yen, thanks to its high quality and safety, her guava products are favored by customers inside and outside the province. In recent years, her Ruby guava products have also been purchased in large quantities by customers in Binh Dinh province and Ho Chi Minh City for resale. To have a stable source of goods, in recent years, she has linked up and provided technical support for organic Ruby guava cultivation with 7 households inside and outside the commune. At the same time, she has agreed to purchase all products to help households feel secure in their cultivation.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hung (Jro Ktu Dak Yang village) happily shared: With Ms. Yen's technical support, I have been taking care of nearly 4 sao of guava effectively. Through monitoring, guava grown organically has grown well and is less susceptible to pests and diseases. Recently, the guava garden has yielded more than 1 ton of fruit and Ms. Yen has purchased the product, so my family is very secure."


Mr. Nguyen Trung Phi (Tan Lap village, Tan An commune, Dak Po district) said: “My family has 4 sao of guava planted since 2020. Thanks to Ms. Yen's guidance on organic guava growing techniques, the guava trees have grown and developed well, giving high yield and quality. With this area, on average, my family harvests more than 7 tons of guava each year. Thanks to Ms. Yen's support in product output, my family has a stable income.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Nho - Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Dak Po district - said: Currently, the district has about 300 hectares of fruit trees, mainly guava, dragon fruit, longan... Recently, farmers in the district have been proactive in researching and studying techniques for safe fruit tree care to increase product value. In particular, Ms. Nguyen Thi Yen's household in Yang Bac commune has applied natural methods in controlling pests and harmful insects to protect crops, creating safe, high-quality products.


In the coming time, the District Farmers’ Association will promote and mobilize members and farmers in the area to continue applying safe fruit growing techniques to increase product value. At the same time, actively support farmers in promoting their products to have stable output.
