Lucky "adopted children"

Tran Duy Dan, a student in class 8A3 at Ly Tu Trong Secondary School (Khanh Hoi Commune, U Minh District), is one of the cases that Khanh Hoi Border Guard Station supported in studying until he finished grade 12.

Duy Dan is in a particularly difficult situation. He lives with his mother and younger sister. His father left home a long time ago and has been out of contact. Currently, Duy Dan and her mother live in a rented room. The family's main source of income depends on his sick mother selling soft drinks on the roadside. Due to their poor family background, Duy Dan's mother also has a blood clot and has to take medication and attend regular check-ups, making things even more difficult.

Despite living in a poor environment, Duy Dan always studied hard and was an excellent student at school for many years. After school, he also helped his mother with housework and took care of his younger siblings.

“Duy Dan is very obedient, filial and a good student. I am always afraid that with my health condition, I will not be able to support my child to study properly. Luckily, since Khanh Hoi Border Guard Station has supported him with 500,000 VND per month, Dan's education has been guaranteed. I am very grateful for the support and help from the border guards, which has created conditions for him to go to school,” Ms. Vo Thuy Vi (Tran Duy Dan's mother) emotionally said.

Ms. Duong Thi Yen Ngoc, Tran Duy Dan's homeroom teacher, said that although he was only in 8th grade, Duy Dan participated in the district-level Literature competition for 9th grade middle school students, won second prize and was selected for the district team to participate in the provincial-level competition.

Not only is Duy Dan a good student, he is also active and enthusiastic in participating in school and class activities and is a shining example in the Team movements. “In 2023, Duy Dan won first prize in the “Red Flamboyant Talents of Ca Mau Province” contest; third prize in the “Musical Instruments and Young Talents” contest of the province; won the title of “Excellent Team Commander” at the provincial level and was selected for the provincial team to participate in the “Children Speak Forum” in Hanoi .

In particular, I am also one of three students honored to represent children of Ca Mau province to attend the 5th national "Dien Bien Young Soldiers" festival in 2024 organized by the Central Council of Young Pioneers, in Dien Bien province", Ms. Yen Ngoc informed.

“The achievements I have achieved are thanks to the great support from the border guards. I am always grateful to them and proud to be the adopted son of the Border Guard Station. I promise to always try harder and make more efforts in my studies so as not to disappoint the border guards, my family and teachers. My dream is to finish high school, then take the entrance exam to the school of theater and cinema, hoping to become an artist in the future,” Duy Dan shared.

Lieutenant Colonel Dinh Van Khen, Political Commissar of Khanh Hoi Border Guard Station, said that the program "Helping children go to school - Adopted children of the Border Guard Station" has been implemented by the unit since the 2015-2016 school year, and has so far directly supported dozens of students in difficult circumstances in the area. In the 2023-2024 school year alone, the program has supported 3 children with an amount of 500,000 VND/child/month. In addition to monthly financial support, Khanh Hoi Border Guard Station also regularly visits, encourages and gives gifts on holidays and Tet, thereby encouraging the children's learning spirit.

Happy Love Class

Since 2016, the Ca Mau Border Guard has provided support to over 300 students in difficult circumstances. In particular, the unit has supported a charity class on Hon Chuoi Island (Song Doc Town, Tran Van Thoi District) for many years.

The class on Hon Chuoi Island currently has more than 20 students who are children of fishermen on the island, studying from grade 1 to grade 7. Major Tran Binh Phuc, Deputy Head of the Mass Mobilization Team, Hon Chuoi Border Guard Station, has been assigned to be in charge of this class for many years. The teacher in the green uniform Tran Binh Phuc always considers his students as his own children and siblings.

“I came to the teaching profession by fate, but I stuck with it by heart. In the beginning, after work, I would sit down in the evening to prepare lesson plans for the next day's class. Teaching a class with 7 different levels of knowledge is very difficult. Every time I prepare a lesson plan, I have to distill the most basic knowledge and make it concise and easy to understand to teach the students. Most of the students here have little contact with the outside environment, so their social knowledge is limited. Teaching them the most basic knowledge and citing the easiest to understand examples is like holding their hands and climbing each step of the knowledge ladder,” Mr. Phuc shared.

Most of the children on Hon Chuoi Island are poor and in difficult circumstances. In addition to teaching them how to read and write, soldier Tran Binh Phuc and his teammates at Hon Chuoi Border Guard Station also actively mobilize kind-hearted people to support the children with learning tools and essential necessities, creating all conditions for them to find a more favorable shore of knowledge.

“As a soldier, the more difficult the place is, the stronger the will to succeed. I always try to make the most of my time and arrange my work scientifically to both complete my political tasks and ensure my attendance at school. Teaching is no longer a responsibility for me but a joy. After finishing primary school here, students will return to the mainland to study secondary school. Every time I hear that my students on the mainland are studying well and being well-behaved, I feel my job is even more meaningful,” said teacher Phuc.

“Ca Mau is a remote province, the lives of a part of the people are still difficult, especially in coastal border areas. The program “Helping children go to school - adopted children of border guards” not only helps and creates conditions for children in difficult circumstances to go to school, lighting up their dreams, but also contributes to improving the intellectual level and socio-economic development in coastal communes and towns.

The program also contributes to creating a close bond between the people and the border guards, building a strong national border defense, a solid people's position, contributing to maintaining sovereignty, security and order in the maritime border area."
