During the feudal period, Thanh Nham ancient town was an important military location, built in 1373, originally as a military base. After hundreds of years of construction and expansion, Thanh Nham ancient town has been transformed from a citadel built of earth to a stone one, with four gates: east, west, south, and north. Currently, only the south and north gates remain.
Thanh Nham ancient town has 4 main streets and 26 small alleys. The streets and small alleys are paved with stone. The walls of people's houses are also built with stone, true to the name Thanh Nham - green stone. The architectural works in the inner city are still preserved intact in the feudal architectural style from the house gates, tiled roofs, window frames...
Thanh Nham ancient town has many relics such as towers, terraces, communal houses, pavilions, pagodas, temples, palaces, shrines, towers, courtyards... The most prominent of which are the first palace (Van Tho Palace), the second temple (Ban Lan Quy Temple, Trieu Quoc Chu Temple), the fifth pavilion (Khue Quang Pavilion, Van Xuong Pavilion, Van Long Pavilion, Tam Cung Pavilion, Ngoc Hoang Pavilion), the eighth temple (Ton Tan Temple, Than Tai Temple, Hoa Than Temple, Hac Than Temple, Duoc Vuong Temple, Loi To Temple, Xuyen Chu Temple, Dong Nhac Temple), the ninth temple (Cuu Tuyen Pagoda, Tu Van Pagoda, Hoan Am Pagoda, Trieu Duong Pagoda, Tho Phuc Pagoda, Vien Thong Pagoda, Nghenh Tuong Pagoda, Phuong Hoang Pagoda, Lien Hoa Pagoda). In addition, there is also Thanh Nam ancient library, Trang Nguyen Palace...
In 2005, Thanh Nam ancient town was recognized as a national historical and cultural ancient town, and in 2017 it continued to be voted as a level 5A national tourist area.
