After about 2 months of opening for sale and adding millions of seats on "hot" flights, the price of Tet 2025 flight tickets on all routes is still sky-high.

Although there are still more than 2 months until Lunar New Year 2025, there are still many tickets available, but airfares are still double the usual price. Many people who want to return home for Tet are still "sitting on pins and needles" as ticket prices skyrocket.

Buying early doesn't get you cheap tickets either.

According to a survey by VTC News on the morning of November 10, round-trip economy class tickets on many domestic and international routes during the Lunar New Year 2025 (from January 24, 2025 - December 25, Giap Thin year to February 3, 2025 - the 6th day of Tet) have increased from over 1 million to nearly 3 million VND/ticket compared to normal days and increased by a million VND compared to the same period last year.

Specifically, the round-trip economy class ticket price for the Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi flight (including taxes and fees) of Vietjet Air is 6.1 million VND, an increase of 2.3 million VND compared to the current flight time; Vietnam Airlines is more than 7.7 million VND, an increase of more than 2.7 million VND compared to the current time; Vietravel Airlines is 6.9 million VND, an increase of more than 2.6 million VND; Bamboo Airways is 7.5 million VND, an increase of more than 2.8 million VND.

At the same flight time (from January 24, 2025 to February 3, 2025), the Ho Chi Minh City - Hai Phong route, the round-trip ticket price including taxes and fees of Vietjet Air is 7.7 million VND; Vietnam Airlines is 7.75 million VND. The prices of both airlines have increased by more than 4.5 million VND compared to the current flight time, an increase of about 2 million VND/round-trip ticket compared to the same period last year.

Other flights to the northern provinces also have sky-high ticket prices.

Specifically, a round-trip economy class ticket for the Ho Chi Minh City - Thanh Hoa route of Vietjet Air costs 7.3 million VND; Vietnam Airlines costs 7.5 million VND.

For the flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Nghe An, the round-trip ticket price of Vietjet is 7.2 million VND; Vietnam Airlines is 7.8 million VND; Bamboo Airways is 7.4 million VND.

Meanwhile, flights during Tet from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang or Binh Dinh also have prices ranging from 4.8 - 7 million VND/round trip ticket.

Many passengers said that even though they booked tickets 3-4 months in advance, the ticket prices were still very high. The prices for these routes also increased by more than 1.5-2.5 million VND compared to this time and more than 1 million VND compared to the same time last year.

Mr. Pham Ngoc Tung, director of a business in Go Vap district (HCMC), said that every year his family returns to their hometown and ticket prices are always high near Tet.

“Although I researched from agents, airline websites and online sites, I was shocked by the high ticket prices. This year’s Tet ticket prices have nearly doubled compared to normal days and are nearly 2 million VND higher than the same time last year per round-trip ticket.” Mr. Tung said.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Trung, owner of an airline ticket agency in Tan Son Nhat area (HCMC) explained that Tet ticket prices are always high due to sudden increase in demand, regardless of whether customers book early.

“However, agents like me did not expect the ticket prices to increase so much this year. Along with having to compete with e-ticketing sites, expensive ticket prices, and limited customers, agents have reduced ticket sales and reduced income from ticket supply.

This could lead to an increase in the number of empty seats. If airlines do not proactively adjust prices accordingly, the situation of unsold tickets may occur during the peak Tet season this year," Mr. Trung said.

Airlines increase millions of Tet tickets

To meet the increasing travel demand of people at the end of the year and Lunar New Year 2025, from September 2024, Vietnam Airlines Group including Vietnam Airlines, Pacific Airlines and VASCO will open early sale of nearly 1.5 million flight tickets for Tet on the entire domestic flight network.

Vietjet Air also opened early sales of 2.6 million Tet tickets during the period from January 15, 2024 to February 12, 2025 (December 16, year of the Dragon to January 15, year of the Snake).

Bamboo Airways has also launched ticket sales from January 15 to February 12, 2025. The airline applies a wide range of ticket prices, flexibly adjusting according to actual market demand so that passengers can choose suitable tickets.

Recently, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has granted regular flight permits for the 2024 Winter Flight Schedule to 5 Vietnamese airlines and 72 foreign airlines with more than 4,600 round-trip flights/week, an increase of 188 round-trip flights/week compared to the 2024 Summer Flight Schedule.

In addition, in order to meet the exploitation plans of airlines during the peak period of the Lunar New Year 2025, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has carried out preparations such as: creating conditions for airlines to supplement their fleets; adjusting the parameters for coordinating landing and take-off times at Tan Son Nhat airport (from January 14, 2025 to February 12, 2025); directing service units in the air transport chain to develop plans, prepare resources, and be ready to serve night time slots.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam will monitor the situation of seat reservations and airfares on domestic routes to promptly direct airlines to supplement capacity on routes with high demand, meeting passenger needs during the peak period of the Lunar New Year 2025.
