According to PCGamer , research conducted by TrendForce shows that Microsoft has set a new baseline for RAM requirements in computers if they want to run Copilot at 16 GB, meaning PC users with 8 GB of RAM will have to upgrade if they want to enjoy this tool.
Windows PC needs 16 GB RAM if you want to use Copilot
Microsoft's introduction of a 16GB RAM requirement for future AI PCs is seen as a major step in getting consumers to add more RAM to their devices. This is because 8GB of RAM has long been the minimum requirement for a PC serving advanced functions. Outside of gaming, 16GB of RAM is still the practical minimum for anyone who plays a lot of light indie games. Even on a modern system with some basic background programs and a large number of browser tabs open, 8GB of RAM can quickly be filled up.
DDR4 and even DDR5 RAM prices are now quite cheap, making upgrading from 8GB to 16GB of RAM relatively inexpensive. However, this may not be the case for long, as manufacturers are cutting back on production, which will increase the cost of RAM upgrades over time. If you buy a device with soldered RAM and no upgrade options, you’re in for a disappointment.
Whether or not users are interested in taking advantage of Microsoft's Copilot AI features, 8GB of RAM seems to be no longer enough for regular tasks.
