In recent years, the act of giving calligraphy with good wishes by "calligraphers" in traditional ao dai and turban seems to have become a familiar image, associated with every occasion of Tet.
Khang Chu Long is one of the most well-known calligraphers. Recently, he has written nearly 5,000 calligraphy words for people in Hanoi. He often goes to schools, businesses or hospitals to give away calligraphy.
“A beautiful work needs to be based on many factors such as coherent content, profound meaning, balanced and harmonious layout, and skillful writing techniques,” Mr. Long shared.
According to him, business people often ask for the word "Thuan" with the wish for smooth sailing in their work; the word "Loc" with the wish for a prosperous year; the word "Phuc" to hope for luck, happiness and prosperity.
In families with elderly people, children often hang the word "Tho" to show respect to their ancestors, wishing their grandparents and parents good health and long life.
Many families also choose the word "An" to pray for peace; the word "Chi" to express the will to overcome all difficulties; the word "Dat" with the hope of achieving wishes; the word "Dac" means to get; the word "Nhan" means to be patient in everything...
Parents often ask for words like "Learning", "Filial Piety", "Etiquette", "Righteousness", "Progress" for their children... with the hope that their children will study diligently, be filial, and have manners...
The calligraphy of "calligrapher" Khang Chu Long is often written on red paper. According to Eastern beliefs, red is the color of life, strength, full of energy and enthusiasm.
According to Mr. Long, writing calligraphy in Vietnamese script touches the emotions of many people. Each word written will show the heart, personality, soul and creativity of each individual.
“Giving calligraphy at the beginning of spring demonstrates the nation’s tradition of respecting teachers and learning, contributing to preserving and promoting the value of Vietnamese calligraphy art. Parallel sentences and wishes on red paper are spiritual gifts to welcome the new year, expressing the wishes of the beginning of the year,” Mr. Long added.
