On July 14, the Department of Domestic Market Management and Development ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) said that nearly 200 pigs of unknown origin, most of them infected with African swine fever, were discovered by authorities in Phu Tho province and forced to be destroyed on the night of July 11.

The Market Management Force of Hoa Binh - Ky Son Wards coordinated with the Interdisciplinary Inspection Team including the Provincial Market Management, Economic Police Department, Traffic Police - Phu Tho Provincial Police and the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department - Phu Tho Department of Agriculture and Environment to inspect a vehicle transporting animals through the area.

The vehicle being checked had license plate 37H-014.36, and was traveling in the direction of Son La - Phu Tho - Hanoi when it was discovered and stopped while passing through Ky Son ward.

Upon inspection, the Working Group discovered that the vehicle was carrying 192 commercial pigs, with a total weight of about 17.2 tons.

However, the driver and the owner of the goods could not present documents proving the origin and quarantine papers as prescribed.

The specialized agency then took samples for rapid testing, the results showed that 4/5 samples were positive for African swine fever virus.

Faced with the serious situation, to prevent infected pigs from entering the market, the Inspection Team coordinated with local authorities to destroy all pigs that night. The destruction process was closely monitored according to professional procedures.

The case file has been transferred to the competent authority to handle administrative violations against the carrier according to the law.

According to the market management agency, the incident shows that illegal animal transportation poses great risks, threatening food safety and disease prevention.

Recently, many outbreaks of African swine fever have been continuously discovered and announced in localities, especially in the North.

This situation causes concern for the livestock industry in herd restoration, and makes consumers insecure about food safety.
