ODAB-1500 thermobaric bomb with UMPK module accurately hits the target

According to RT on September 24, on Tuesday, the Russian Defense Ministry released a video showing Russia using vacuum bombs to attack and destroy a military position of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

According to RT, the Russian attack was carried out using ODAB-1500 bombs, targeting a temporary Ukrainian military deployment point near the town of Kupyansk, in the Kharkov region.

Although Moscow did not elaborate, the bomb used in the attack appeared to have been equipped with a Unified Guidance and Lifting Wing (UMPK) module. During the conflict with Ukraine, Russia has increasingly used wing upgrade kits on older bombs to turn them into precision weapons.

Initially, the Unified Guidance and Lifting Wing module was used with smaller explosive bombs such as the FAB-250 or FAB-500 and these upgrades have transformed them into specialized weapons. The ODAB-1500 thermobaric bomb and the RBK-500 cluster bomb have also been upgraded with the Unified Guidance and Lifting Wing module by Russia.

In 2023, these kits will continue to be used for larger bombs, since mid-June, three-ton FAB-3000 super bombs equipped with Unified Guidance and Lifting Wing modules have been recorded in numerous attacks on military positions and industrial facilities serving the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

In the airstrike, which the Russian Ministry of Defense released a video of, an ODAB-1500 thermobaric bomb (also known colloquially as a vacuum bomb) hit a building where Ukrainian forces were concentrated. The building, located in a remote agricultural area, was completely destroyed in the massive explosion. The video was captured by a reconnaissance drone.

According to estimates by the Russian Defense Ministry, up to 40 soldiers and five vehicles of the Ukrainian forces were lost in the attack.

Russian forces have entered Ugledar

On September 24, Avia reported that Russian assault units broke through the defense lines of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and entered the outskirts of Vuhledar. After battles that lasted all night, the Russian troops overcame the enemy's defenses and consolidated their positions on the outskirts of the city. Fierce clashes are still taking place here.

According to Avia military sources, the Russian assault force received strong support from artillery, which continuously shelled Ukrainian positions. Information received on the morning of September 24 said that Russian units had entered the territory of Ugledar, but were still facing resistance from the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Currently, these forces still hold part of the city. Fighting is still going on both in the suburbs and in residential areas, which significantly complicates the advance.
