When the European Parliament 'declared war' on Hungary

This resolution has no binding legal force within the EU or on the European Commission and the European Council, nor on Hungary. Nevertheless, it is a strong blow to Hungary's reputation and prestige and a demonstration of the EU's authority (through the EP) over the European Commission and the European Council. The resolution is tantamount to a "declaration of war" by the EP against Hungary.

The reason here is that the EP is not satisfied with the implementation of democracy, human rights and the rule of law according to the principles and values, according to the common criteria and standards of the EU. The European Commission is also at odds with Hungary on these issues and has applied a number of sanctions.

Although not certain of victory, the EP’s declaration of war against Hungary also aims to increase pressure on the European Commission and the European Council in sanctioning Hungary. Although the European Commission and the European Council sanction Hungary, they still have to maintain relations with this country because they still need Hungary’s vote in decisions that must be agreed upon by all EU members. All the EP can do is not allow the Hungarian leader to speak at the EP plenary session and boycott cooperation with Hungary during the time this country holds the rotating EU presidency.
