Nguyen Trong Tao (August 25, 1947 - January 7, 2019) was a poet, musician, writer, journalist, and painter. He was born into a Confucian family in Trang Khe village, Dien Hoa commune, Dien Chau district, Nghe An province.

In 1969, he joined the army and later became the Captain of the Cultural Propaganda Team of Group 22B, Head of the Artistic Assault Group of Division 341B, Military Region IV.

In 1976, he was transferred by the General Department of Politics to Hanoi, then studied at Nguyen Du Writing School, Course I, and then became Chief Editor of the Cultural House of Military Region IV.

In 1988, he moved to Hue, where he became the Editor-in-Chief of the Binh Tri Thien Literature and Arts Association. In 1990, he co-founded Cua Viet Magazine.

In 1997, he moved to Hanoi, worked as Editorial Secretary of Music Magazine, Editor-in-Chief of Bao Tho, Member of the Poetry Council of the Vietnam Writers Association, and then retired.
