The world lacks AI human resources and opportunities for Vietnam
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not just an emerging technology industry but has quickly become one of the most exciting fields.
According to Dr. Vo Xuan Hoai, Deputy Director of the National Innovation Center (NIC, Ministry of Planning and Investment), large technology corporations such as NVIDIA, Microsoft, Google, and Meta all consider AI as a strategic spearhead for the future. This has created a fever for AI human resources, especially in fields such as chip design, healthcare, and education.
“NVIDIA, Microsoft, Google, Meta, Qualcomm,... are all aiming to apply AI to develop existing technology, as well as develop AI-applied devices. The current trend is to apply AI to do other jobs, such as chip design. Applying AI in healthcare and education has also been very popular in recent times ,” shared Dr. Vo Xuan Hoai.
Commenting on the need for AI human resources, the Deputy Director of the National Innovation Center said that in the past 2 years, large technology corporations in the world have been interested in Vietnam because our country possesses a workforce of intellectuals and engineers with good AI application capabilities.
“ In the near future, there will be many positive and optimistic signals with the deep and close participation of large technology corporations in the Vietnamese market ,” said Dr. Vo Xuan Hoai.
The interest of businesses in AI human resources is also increasing significantly. However, Dr. Dang Minh Tuan, Director of CMC Institute of Technology Application, commented that the AI market in Vietnam still has a lot of potential but is lacking high-quality human resources.
Dr. Dang Minh Tuan said: “ AI is a 'hot' industry so many businesses need it. AI itself is also broad, for example image processing, audio processing, natural language processing, knowledge data,... each area requires different skills. The demand for AI human resources in the world is currently very high, the trend of applying AI is also very high but the market is lacking .”
Vietnam should have specialized AI departments at universities.
In Vietnam, since 2021, the Prime Minister has issued the National Strategy on Artificial Intelligence Development to 2030, which clearly states the issue of human resources, the formation of national innovation centers and training, research and incubation centers on AI. This shows that Vietnam has grasped and is looking for ways to take the lead in AI trends.
Sharing with VietNamNet reporters about the story of training AI human resources, Dr. Vo Xuan Hoai said that artificial intelligence itself is a technology field, with a foundation in mathematics and engineering. However, training AI human resources is much more favorable than other fields.
To train human resources on semiconductor chips, there must be a system of practical equipment, and to train on mechanics, there must be machines. But with artificial intelligence, preparing AI human resources can be done completely through online training. Therefore, the replication and spread of AI will be very fast.
“ The foundation of young Vietnamese people is quite good. To apply AI, only short-term training of 3 to 6 months is needed to fully meet the current needs of the market, ” said Dr. Vo Xuan Hoai.
The National Innovation Center is currently working with Google to provide 40,000 online training scholarships each year, including AI training under a standard program with a certificate issued by Google. In the near future, NIC will cooperate with Qualcomm to have more such online training courses.
With this cooperation, thousands of Vietnamese students will have the opportunity to access international standard training programs. This is a promising step to help Vietnam improve the quality of AI human resources.
Another important step forward is the establishment of dedicated AI departments at universities.
AI personnel are usually taught in Information Technology or Computer Science faculties, but the establishment of the first Artificial Intelligence faculty at the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology (PTIT) is a positive sign.
According to Dr. Vo Xuan Hoai, PTIT's pioneering could be a boost for other universities to quickly catch up and expand AI training.
Commenting on this story, Dr. Dang Minh Tuan said that human resources working on AI in Vietnam mainly come from two main sources: University training and short-term training through conversion courses from related majors.
The emergence of artificial intelligence departments in universities would be a good sign, as it would make AI training more specialized and focused.
“CMC even wants to form an AI university. The AI university here not only teaches about AI but also applies AI in education and training, ” said Dr. Dang Minh Tuan.
In the context of AI developing strongly globally, Vietnam cannot stand aside. With the right strategies, Vietnam can completely become one of the leading countries in training AI human resources, not only meeting domestic needs but also reaching out to the world. Now is the time to act, so as not to miss this golden opportunity.
