The severe crisis in Marseille

Coach Roberto De Zerbi and midfielder Adrien Rabiot's mother constantly fought with each other, exposing the dark corners of the Marseille dressing room.

Adrien Rabiot is going through the darkest days of his career at Olympique de Marseille.

In a press conference held in the early morning of August 23, coach Roberto De Zerbi did not hesitate to criticize Rabiot and the mother of the French midfielder: "I will not lower myself for a player. In a workplace, if two employees fight like they are in a pub in England, with a colleague lying on the floor unconscious (Bakola), what will the employer do? There are two options: suspend or fire the fighter."

The 45-year-old coach said he could have turned a blind eye to the action, but refused to lose his dignity: “I could have pretended not to see anything. But I did not lose my dignity as a coach. I always support the club. Yes, no teeth were broken, but the fight was something I have never seen before in my life. I saw the doctor trying to revive the player on the floor, while Rowe and Rabiot continued to fight.”

De Zerbi also dismissed the false information from Rabiot's family, especially his mother - Véronique Rabiot, his agent and manager: "People around Rabiot say things that are not true. His mother forgets two things: I was the one who decided to give the captain's armband to the player in Paris. And for a year, I gave her son more attention and affection than my own son. This is a fair decision."

De Zerbi's statement, described by L'Equipe as "firm and decisive", exposed the dark side and chaos in the Marseille dressing room. Even though Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe were put on the transfer list and no longer had a chance to play for Marseille, the brawl they caused has plunged the city club into a serious crisis.

Shortly afterwards, Veronique Rabiot also criticized De Zerbi: “When Mason Greenwood signed for Marseille after beating his girlfriend, De Zerbi said he could be given a second chance. I agree with giving others a second chance, but is my son the only one who doesn’t get that?”

Rabiot's mother also previously emphasized that when the incident happened, both coach De Zerbi and director Benatia were present in the dressing room, but they were helpless and could not intervene. This shows how chaotic Marseille is.
