(CLO) Israeli police have arrested Eliezer Feldstein, a close aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on charges of leaking confidential information to foreign media.
The investigation focuses on allegations that the Israeli Prime Minister's Office told foreign media that Hamas was planning to smuggle hostages out of Gaza via the Egyptian border, in order to put pressure on Netanyahu in ceasefire and hostage exchange talks.
Feldstein, who has been identified by opposition politicians as a Netanyahu aide, is among those being questioned for leaking "sensitive intelligence."

However, Netanyahu's spokesman denied there had been any leaks from the Prime Minister's Office, saying "the person concerned never attended security meetings," referring to Feldstein. The office also denied that the leaks had any impact on negotiations with Hamas.
Opposition leader Yair Lapid accused the Israeli Prime Minister's Office of leaking "false secret documents" to thwart the hostage swap. Families of Gaza hostages have also accused Netanyahu of repeatedly blocking deals with Hamas, arguing that ending the Gaza war would force him to hold elections.
Opposition leaders Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz, who quit Netanyahu's wartime cabinet earlier, have condemned the leak as a failure of government. They have called for an investigation into whether the leak was a political tactic by Netanyahu for personal gain.
