(Dan Tri) - After Dick Jaspers' defeat to Heo Jung Han in the 1/8 round of the World Cup, Vietnamese player Tran Quyet Chien took the world number one position in 3-cushion carom.
In the round of 16 of the 3-cushion carom billiards World Cup held in Türkiye, Tran Quyet Chien defeated his compatriot Tran Thanh Luc with a score of 50-39 to enter the quarterfinals. The joy was doubled for Quyet Chien when Dick Jaspers lost to Heo Jung Han with a score of 30-50. Tran Quyet Chien became world number 1 (Photo: TH). With the above results, Quyet Chien has surpassed the world number one in both rankings of the World Billiards Federation. One is the World Players Ranking (world ranking) which calculates the results of the 8 most recent World Cups, one World Championship (world championship), continents and countries. The second ranking is the UMB Events Ranking (UMB ranking) which calculates the results of the 10 most recent World Cups and one world championship. Before the tournament in Turkey, Quyet Chien was ranked second in both rankings, 1 point behind Kim Jun Tae in the world ranking and 10 points behind Dick Jaspers in the UMB ranking. Kim Jun Tae was eliminated from the group stage of the World Cup in Turkey, and Dick Jaspers also had to stop in the round of 16. Thanks to that, Quyet Chien "killed two birds with one stone" to become the world number one in both rankings. Quyet Chien has been in good form since the beginning of 2024. In March, he won the World Cup in Bogota (Colombia). Then, he and Bao Phuong Vinh won the world team 3-cushion carom billiards championship. In his illustrious career, Quyet Chien is the first and only player in the country to win 3 World Cup championships. Becoming the world's No. 1 is considered a historic milestone for Quyet Chien and Vietnamese sports. It is a great mark for this player as well as the country's sports in the international arena.
