Ms. Le Thuy Hang - General Director of Saigon Jewelry Company Limited (SJC) - recently responded to the media about why the company temporarily stopped purchasing gold bars with two dented letters and rejected one-letter serial numbers. She said the company is always responsible to customers for the quality of gold bars produced by the company.
SJC single letter gold bars are models with a letter character before the serial number on the gold bar. These types of gold were produced by SJC Company from 1992 to 1996.
For single-character gold bars produced by the company before 1996, the company has set aside a period of time for customers to convert to 2-character gold bars at no additional cost.
Currently, the company still buys single-character SJC gold bars at the same price as two-character SJC gold bars. The company will then process the single-character gold into two-character SJC gold bars to sell to customers.

SJC gold with one character and two characters that are dented, warped, or not qualified for circulation must be reprocessed. To reprocess, the company must allocate resources and obtain permission from the State Bank.
In recent days, the company has temporarily stopped purchasing dented gold due to objective reasons. Currently, SJC has arranged resources to reprocess and will continue to purchase dented SJC gold bars.
Ms. Hang added that the quality and weight of the one-character SJC gold bar is the same as the two-character SJC gold bar, but because it was produced before 1996, when the two-character SJC product was produced, consumers preferred to use the two-character SJC gold.
Currently, SJC company no longer sells single-character SJC but only purchases it to reprocess into 2-character SJC gold bars.
Previously, as Dan Tri reporter reported, at SJC headquarters (District 3, HCMC), the store staff announced that the company had temporarily stopped buying gold bars with one-letter serial numbers and dented gold bars.
Sharing the reason for stopping purchasing, SJC representative said it is not that the company does not want to take back gold with one denomination that customers bring to sell, but the company does not have information about when the State Bank will open a workshop to re-stamp these types of gold.
Normally, with these types of gold as well as dented gold when the company buys back on the market with a volume of about 1,000 taels, it will ask the monetary management agency to reprocess it.
But for the past 2 weeks, the company has stopped purchasing because the inventory has increased quite high but it is not known when it will be allowed to process.
