Even a student with a full 10 score in his/her academic record still has no chance of getting into many universities.

(Dan Tri) - Students with a transcript full of 9s and 10s are "out of luck" at many universities that do not consider admission based on transcripts.

In previous years, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education was one of the schools with the highest admission scores based on transcripts. In many majors, candidates had to score nearly 10 points per subject to be admitted.

In 2025, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education will remove high school transcripts from its admission method (Illustration: Hoai Nam).

In 2024, more than 14,000 excellent students failed to graduate from Ho Chi Minh City University of Education based on high school transcripts when the admission score was extremely high.

The benchmark score in 2024 according to the admission method using the school's high school academic results ranges from 25.4 to 29.81.

The major with the highest standard score is chemistry pedagogy with 29.81 points; followed by math pedagogy with 29.55 points; physics pedagogy with 29.48 points; biology pedagogy with 29.46 points... To be admitted to these majors, candidates must achieve a score of 9.9 points or less per subject.

But in the 2025 admission season, students with a GPA of 9 or 10 will no longer have the opportunity to use this result to apply to Ho Chi Minh City University of Education when the school officially eliminates the admission method based on high school GPA.

Many universities "turn their backs" on academic records (Illustration: TL).

Instead, the school will focus on using specialized competency assessment tests as an independent admission method and increase the quota for this method.

No longer using transcripts, in 2025, the school will use 4 admission methods including direct admission according to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training (10% of the target); priority admission and admission of specialized class students (10-20% of the target);

Admission based on specialized competency assessment exams, expected to be applied to more than 30 majors (40-50% of the quota for each major); admission based on the 2025 high school graduation exam (applied to 20-40% for majors using the admission method based on specialized competency assessment exams or 70-80% for the remaining majors).

Not only this year, many years ago, many large universities in the country "turned their backs" on high school transcripts, not using the method of considering transcripts in admissions such as Saigon University, National Economics University, Hanoi Medical University...

Besides universities that have completely turned their backs on the method of considering transcript scores, many other schools also have ways to reduce the influence of transcript scores in admissions.

In 2025, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade officially reduced the enrollment quota based on high school transcript scores to only 15-20% of the total enrollment quota compared to 30% in 2024.

Instead, this is the first year that Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade will consider admission based on the specialized capacity assessment scores of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education along with methods of considering high school graduation scores, direct admission, considering the capacity assessment scores of Ho Chi Minh City National University...

MSc. Nguyen Thi Xuan Dung, Director of the Media Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH), said that in 2025, the school will also adjust not to use the method of considering transcripts according to 3 semesters but only use the method of considering transcripts according to a combination of 3 subjects in grade 12.

At the University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University), academic transcript scores are the smallest component of the combined admission method.

Specifically, in the combined method, in the academic criteria, high school transcript scores only account for 10%, the remaining high school graduation scores account for 20%, and the Ho Chi Minh City National University's capacity assessment exam scores account for 70%.

Universities give priority to admission methods other than academic records (Illustration: Hoai Nam).

The school also considers individual achievements (5%) including students winning national excellent student competitions, Science and Technology awards, foreign language proficiency, international admission certificates, members of national, provincial/municipal excellent student teams and other academic awards; social activities, literature, sports and arts (5%) including certificates of participation in cultural, sports and arts activities and community activities.

The head of admissions at a university in Ho Chi Minh City said that the fact that universities "turn their backs" or reduce their quotas and the influence of the high school transcript review method is predictable.

For many years now, the issue of high school students' transcripts becoming more and more beautiful and shiny has been mentioned, requiring universities to find other, more suitable admission methods.

This person frankly stated that, instead of depending on the input in grading students at the high school level, schools will choose to proactively recruit students according to methods that he considers more appropriate and objective, such as high school graduation scores, separate exams, combined admissions, etc.
