University training in marriage, why not?
Sixth Tone news site quoted China Central Television (CCTV) as saying that the Civil Affairs Vocational University (under the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China) will start training in marriage majors, enrolling students from September 2024.
This field of study focuses on training high-quality human resources to meet the needs of providing services "of the entire marriage cycle". This includes matchmaking, pre-marital counseling, guidance on marriage registration procedures, wedding organization, pre-divorce counseling...
"This program is expected to enroll 70 undergraduate students from 12 provinces and cities in 2024. The focus of the program is the marriage service industry, aiming to train bachelors with comprehensive capabilities," said Zhao Honggang, vice president of the school.
The marriage curriculum includes courses in management, sociology, family culture, ethics, and economics . In addition, students also receive practical training in areas such as family counseling, wedding planning, and matchmaking services.
"Upon graduation, students can find jobs in marriage service industry-related associations, matchmaking agencies, wedding service companies and marriage and family counseling organizations," said Mr. Zhao.

"Accurate" study
Yu Xiaohui, head of the Department of Marriage Culture and Media Arts - the unit in charge of training in the marriage service and management industry - affirmed that the new major "hits the right acupoint" of the marriage service industry.
Most of the workforce in this industry only has a high school diploma, while the demand for highly skilled workers is increasing. CNBC reported that the industry has tripled in size between 2014 and 2023.
Ms. Yu said that there have been many vocational training courses related to marriage in China in the past. However, these courses mainly focus on wedding planning, a narrow branch of the general marriage service.
Therefore, the school's new curriculum will cover all aspects that may be related to marriage. "In the mid- and high-end market, there is a growing demand for creative talents who can provide high-end wedding planning services, as well as design and develop matchmaking services," said Ms. Yu.
China's alarming marriage rate
The marriage management and service industry was born in the context of China having alarmingly low marriage and birth rates. Meanwhile, the speed of population aging is also causing many concerns.
The number of couples registering marriages in China in 2023 increased by 12.4% compared to 2022, the first increase after nine consecutive years of decline.
However, more than half of the population aged 25-29 in this country is still unmarried and the trend of late marriage is becoming more and more popular.
